3/23/2022 9:21:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS – Four members of the Minnesota men's swimming and diving program are headed to the 2022 NCAA Championships this week in Atlanta, Ga.
With Georgia Tech serving as the host of the NCAA Championships, prelims will start each day at 9 a.m. CT at McAuley Aquatic Center with the finals scheduled for 5 p.m. ESPN3 will have streaming coverage.
Senior Max McHugh, sophomore Chris Nagy and freshman Bar Soloveychik have each been selected to swim for the Golden Gophers. In addition, junior diver Jake Butler earned his spot thanks to his performance at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
McHugh is the defending NCAA champion in both the 100 breast and 200 breast and he enters the 2022 championships as the top seed in both events. His time of 50.58 in the tri-dual against Northwestern and Purdue on Jan. 28 is the fastest in the nation this year in the 100 breast, while he recorded the top time in the 200 breast (1:49.45) when he repeated as the Big Ten champion last month.
In addition, McHugh won the 100 breast for the third straight time at Big Tens. He's the seventh swimmer in Big Ten history to win both breaststroke events in consecutive seasons. In Minnesota history, McHugh became the third swimmer to win multiple individual events in consecutive seasons.
McHugh is looking to become the third Gopher swimmer in history to repeat as a national champion. Steve Jackman won the 100 free from 1961-62 and the 50 free in 1962 and 1963, while Walt Richardson accomplished the feat in the 100 fly from 1963-64.
Nagy earned his way to the NCAAs for the first time in his career in the 1650 free thanks to his personal record time of 14:53.66 at Minnesota's Last Chance Meet. He's competed in the event three times this year, recording 'B' cuts each outing. He took over four seconds off his time between the Minnesota Invite in December and the Big Ten Championships last month, then lowered it again by eight seconds from Big Tens to the Last Chance.
He is also scheduled to compete in the 500 free. He swam the event eight times this year with two provisional cuts, highlighted by his personal best of 4:23.17 which earned him 16th at this year's Big Ten Championships.
Joining Nagy as a first-time NCAA participant is Soloveychik, who is scheduled to compete in the 200 free, 500 free and 1650 free. Soloveychik earned his spot via the 500 free when he set the school record with 4:13.85 as he placed fourth at this year's Big Tens.
Soloveychik also set the school record in the 200 free at Big Tens, leading off the 800 free relay with a time of 1:33.56. In the 1650, Soloveychik recorded 'B' cuts in both of his outings this year, including a personal best of 15:00.14, also recorded at Big Tens this year.
Butler earned his spot with a fifth-place finish at the Zone Diving Championships on the 3-meter and an eighth-place finish on the 1-meter.
