IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers (10-20, 1-5 Big Ten) are set to take on the Iowa Hawkeyes (17-12, 3-3 Big Ten) for their second Big Ten road series of the season. With one more conference victory, head coach John Anderson will become the first manager in Big Ten history to eclipse 600 league wins. The Gophers will play on BTN at 7 p.m. Friday followed by games on B1G+ on Saturday (2 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m.).

SCOUTING IOWA
-Iowa head coach Rick Heller won his 250th game with the Hawkeyes' 6-5 victory over UST on March 21. Heller is third all-time on the program's career wins list.
-UI's pitching staff has been tough to hit in the first two months of the season, allowing just 175 hits and fanning 371 over 263.1 innings, while limiting hitters to a .187 average. Iowa leads the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (12.7) and is second in hits allowed per nine innings (5.98). The Hawkeyes are also 16th in ERA (3.59) and 26th in WHIP (1.26).
-Iowa redshirt freshman Keaton Anthony is hitting a team-best .343 (37-of-108) with 14 doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

SERIES HISTORY

-Prior to that, the Gophers defeated Iowa 3-0 in the 2019 Big Ten Tournament. They last played the Hawkeyes at home in 2018, taking two of three games.
-Minnesota has lost its last eight games in Iowa City. Its last win there came on April 18, 2014, a 4-3 victory.

LAST TIME OUT
-On Tuesday, Minnesota defeated St. Thomas, 2-1. Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Gophers scored a run in both the seventh
-Minnesota fell 11-7 Friday and 5-4 on Saturday before taking down No. 23 Maryland (25-7, 4-2 Big Ten) 4-3 on Sunday.
-The Terps scored four runs in the fourth inning Friday to take a 6-2 lead before cruising to a series-opening victory.
-UMD went up 5-1 after another four-run fourth inning Saturday. The Gophers would fight back, cutting the lead to 5-4, but couldn't tie the game despite loading the bases in both the sixth and seventh innings.
-Minnesota never trailed Sunday. They led 3-1 heading into the seventh, paced by Aidan Maldonado's six innings of work with just one earned run.
-Tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, a two-out triple from Brady Counsell followed by a passed ball allowed him to score the game-winning run. Tom Skoro struck out the side to close it out in the ninth.

JOHN ANDERSON CLOSING IN ON 600 CONFERENCE WINS
-One of the winningest coaches in college baseball history (1,341 wins, 21st), John Anderson is closing in on his 600th Big Ten Conference win. He'll hit that mark with one win against the Hawkeyes this weekend in Iowa City (599-387). No other Big Ten skipper has hit this mark.
-Under Anderson's watch, the Gophers have won 11 Big Ten titles and have made the NCAA Tournament 19 times, including a 2018 Super Regional appearance.

GOPHERS HITTING THE LONG BALL
-Minnesota ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 31 home runs in 30 games this season. Chase Stanke ranks fifth in the conference with nine while Jack Kelly has hit six. Easton Bertrand and Ronald Sweeny are up next with four apiece.

-Minnesota starting catcher Chase Stanke, a Buster Posey Watch list member, has been crushing the ball to start 2022. He ranks fifth in the Big Ten in home runs (9). 17 of his 24 hits are for extra bases, which is a team-high.

MERILA MASHING AS OF LATE
-In the past month of ball, sophomore Boston Merila has been one of the most consistent Gophers at the plate. Since March 13, he's had hits in 11 of the past 14 games, including a pair of multi-hit games.
-He's currently on a four-game hitting streak, which is tied for the longest hit-streak on the team.

GOPHERS LOOKING TO BREAK ROAD WOES
-Since winning 9-1 on opening day at FAU, Minnesota is 0-10 on the road this season. The Gophers are hitting just .224 in road games and have an 8.56 ERA as a staff.

COUNSELL CRUSHING IN CONFERENCE PLAY
-In Minnesota's six conference games, freshman Brady Counsell has led the team in average (.313), total bases (12), triples (1), home runs (1) and ranks second in hits (5).
-In his two starts against Maryland, he went 3-for-8 with a pair of triples and runs. He scored the game-winning run on a passed ball on Sunday to help pull the upset.
-For the season, he leads all true freshmen in appearances (19), batting average (.268) and hits (11).

MALDONADO MAKES HIS WAY
-Redshirt junior Aidan Maldonado brought his best stuff on Sunday in a win over No. 23 Maryland. He battled through 6.0 innings, striking out five and giving up a season-low one earned run.
-He picked up a no-decision, but it's the second time this year he's gone six-or-more innings against a ranked team. Maldonado went 6.0 innings against No. 12 Notre Dame on March 6, striking out five while allowing five hits and just two earned runs.

IRELAND IGNITES THE FLAME
-Junior Friday starter Sam Ireland has been stellar to start the 2022 season. Through eight starts, he's 3-2 with a 3.53 ERA and 51 strikeouts. He ranks 8th in the B1G in K's (51). His three wins are tied for 11th.
-He became the first Gopher since Max Meyer in 2020 to strike out 15-or-more batters in his first two starts of the season.

BULLPEN SHINES IN BIG TEN HOME OPENING WEEKEND
-Minnesota's bullpen was stellar in its final two games this weekend against the No. 23 Terps.
-In its final 9.2 innings pitched, the 'pen' allowed UMD to score in just runs. On Saturday, Richie Holetz, Josh Culliver, Noah DeLuga and Will Semb combined to go 5.2 innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out seven.
