Minnesota tallied three hits on the evening

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team fell 6-0 to the St. Thomas Tommies on Tuesday night at Siebert Field.

True freshman left-hander Tucker Novotny (1-1) earned his first career start on the mound for Minnesota (10-24, 1-8 Big Ten), going 3.0 innings, giving up six hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts. St. Thomas starter Kolby Gartner (1-2) tossed a complete game, striking out eight and allowing just three hits.

UST (8-21, 2-7 Summit) got the scoring going in the top of the second inning with its first two runs of the evening. With two outs and men on first and second, the Tommies got consecutive run-scoring singles by Avery Lehman and Matt Enck.

Two more runs came in the top of the third when third baseman Kevin Halverson hit a two-run home run to left field, putting the visitors up 4-0. Halverson then hit an RBI single to put UST up 5-0 in the top of the fourth. A bases-loaded walk by cleanup hitter Kyle Bartholomew gave the Tommies a 6-0 lead.

Neither team was able to get anything going offensively in the fifth through ninth innings.

Kevin Halverson led UST with a 2-for-4 day at the plate with a home run and three RBI.

Minnesota had not been shutout since April 17, 2021, a 4-0 loss to Michigan. The last time the Gophers were shutout in non-conference play was Feb. 17, 2019, a 9-0 loss at Dallas Baptist.

With tonight's loss, the Gophers fell to 2-1 this season against the Tommies. The two teams will play for the fourth and final time this season next Wednesday.
