The University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics mourns the loss of Gopher great and 2004 Hall of Fame inductee, Julian Hook. He was 80.
Hook was a five-time letterwinner for the Gophers, three with football and two with wrestling.
Despite his relatively small size, just 5-9 and 189 pounds, "Jules" Hook was a defensive stalwart on the Gophers' 1961 and 1962 Rose Bowl teams.
He is credited with breaking up four major plays during the 1960 Minnesota-Illinois game, one many consider the turning point in the season that aimed the Gophers toward their 1960 national championship.
Known for quickness and agility – traits some credited to his pursuits as a wrestler on the Minnesota team -- Hook earned All-Big Ten football honors at linebacker in his senior season.
On the mat, Hook also qualified for the NCAA tournament once during his Gopher career.
Hook obtained a bachelor, master and law degree from the University of Minnesota. He served in the Minnesota Legislature from 1970 to 1974 before opening his own Twin Cities law office.
