MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-18, 0-3 Big Ten) open up their Big Ten home slate this weekend against the Maryland Terrapins (23-6, 2-1 Big Ten). Minnesota opened up Big Ten play at Rutgers last weekend, falling in all three games. The Terrapins took down Penn State in two of three games in College Park. Minnesota head coach John Anderson (598-385) is two Big Ten wins away from becoming the first coach in conference history to win 600 league games.

SCOUTING MARYLAND
-The Terrapins (23-6, 2-1 Big Ten) are led by fifth-year head coach Rob Vaughn, who is the youngest Power Five manager in the country.
-Vaughn led UMW to the NCAA Regionals last year, their first postseason appearance since 2017.
-Led by Villanova transfer Nick Lorusso, the Terps have five starters hitting .295 or better. They rank second in the Big Ten in hitting (.294) while leading the league and ranking 18th in the country in home runs (46). Maxwell Costes is tied for 20th nationally with 11 long balls.
-Maryland ranks third in the Big Ten in ERA (3.77) and are led by LHP Ryan Ramsey, who has a Big Ten-best six wins with a 2.33 ERA.

SERIES HISTORY
-Maryland leads the all-time series, 8-4. The Terrapins took three from Minnesota in College Park in 2021 (12-4, 4-3, 6-3).
-The last time the two teams played at Siebert Field (May 10-12, 2019), Minnesota took two of three from Maryland (3-7, 9-3, 2-1).
-The Gophers took two out of three from the Terps in their Big Ten Championship run in 2016 after being swept on the road in 2018.

LAST TIME OUT
-Minnesota fell 6-4, 11-2 and 9-2 in three games at Rutgers (22-6, 5-1 Big Ten) last weekend.
-Jack Kelly went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a two-run home run to pace the offense on Friday night while Sam Ireland (3-1) had his first loss of 2022.
-Minnesota scored just four runs in a double-header on Saturday, with three of them coming off of a solo home run by Brady Counsell (game one) and a two-run shot by Andrew Wilhite (game two).

GOPHERS HITTING THE LONG BALL
-Minnesota ranks fifth in the Big Ten with 29 home runs in 26 games this season. Chase Stanke ranks fifth in the conference with eight while Jack Kelly has hit six. Easton Bertrand and Ronald Sweeny are up next with four apiece.

MINNESOTA SWIPING BASES AT A HIGH RATE
-The Gophers have been aggressive on the base paths this season, swiping 36 bases in 45 attempts. The 'U' ranks third in the conference in stolen bases and have gotten contributions from nine different players. Bateman (11), Wilhite (6) and Bertrand (5) lead the team.

IRELAND FINDING HIS STUFF
-Junior Friday starter Sam Ireland has been stellar to start the 2022 season. Through seven starts, he's 3-1 with a 2.79 ERA and 45 strikeouts. He ranks eighth in the B1G in innings pitched (38.2) and seventh in strikeouts (45). His three wins are tied for ninth.
-Last week, he was named the No. 66 starting pitcher in the nation by D1Baseball.com.
-He became the first Gopher since Max Meyer in 2020 to strike out 15-or-more batters in his first two starts of the season.

MINNESOTA OPENS UP ITS HOME SLATE AT SIEBERT
-The Gophers open up at Siebert Field for the first of 15 games there this season.
-Despite going 2-8 at Siebert Field in 2021, Minnesota is 52-33 there in the last five seasons.
-The 'U' went 13-7 in 2019, 12-2 in 2018, 10-9 2017, 16-7 in 2016 at Siebert Field.
-The Gophers are 6-2 in their last eight home openers at Siebert Field. (Lost 7-6 to Michigan State on April 2, 2021).

GOPHERS AT THE BANK
-Minnesota went 6-6 inside the confines of U.S. Bank Stadium this season.
-The wins are over St. Thomas (12-0), Kansas (8-1, Air Force (7-6) and a sweep over WIU (11-4, 7-2, 6-1).
-Of their six losses there, five of them are by three runs or fewer and four are by two runs or fewer.

CULLIVER, SEMB, SKORO THRIVING OUT OF THE PEN
-Minnesota relievers Josh Culliver (10), Will Semb (12) and Tom Skoro (13) have combined to make 35 appearances out of the bullpen in 2022, which lead the team.
-Led by Skoro (2.25), all have posted ERA under 5.30 and have been the steadiest arms in the back end.
-A redshirt senior southpaw, Skoro hasn't let up any runs in 11 of his 13 outings this spring. 
-Semb hasn't allowed any runs in six of his past seven outings while Culliver has gone three of his last four.

BATEMAN SETS THE TONE
-Sophomore centerfielder Brett Bateman ranks second on the team in hits (31) and first in at bats (108). He's also swiped a team-best 11 bases, which ranks third in the league.
-Bateman is the only Gopher to start in all 26 games.

KELLY CRUSHING OPPOSING PITCHING
-Senior utility player Jack Kelly has been on a tear in his final collegiate season.
-He leads the team in hits (34) and RBI (28) while also totaling 11 multi-hit games.
-B1G Ranks: Batting Avg.: .405 (3rd), SLG%: .798 (1st), RBI: 28 (9th), triples: 3 (2nd) and OB%: .475 (8th).
