Minnesota Continues Doubles Success in Road Loss to Wisconsin

Gophers claimed the doubles point, before falling 3-4 in Madison
On Saturday, the University of Minnesota women's tennis team lost their second consecutive Big Ten road match. The Gophers traveled to Wisconsin for a border battle with the Badgers. Each team came into the match ranked, Minnesota at No. 61, and Wisconsin at No. 47. Minnesota continued their doubles success, before Wisconsin won four of six singles competitions. They improved to 5-1 on the year in Madison, and 5-2 in Big Ten play.
The Gophers moved to 14-8 on the season, 2-5 in Big Ten matches. They will have two opportunities next week at Baseline to best their win total from 2018 and 2019.
Minnesota won at doubles positions No. 1 and No. 2, their fifth consecutive match claiming the first point.
In doubles play, Emilee Duong and Ekin Ercetin won at the first position, 6-1 over Alina Mukhortova and Xinyu Cai. This match marked their fifth win together on the season. At No. 2, Rachel Hanford and Dalila Said continued their streak, winning their last four matches played together. The pair defeated Antonela Stoica and Taylor Cataldi, 6-3. Vasia Karvouni and Lucy Lu's match at No. 3 went unfinished on account of previous results.
Minnesota posted wins at singles No. 1 and No. 2, as Wisconsin earned the narrow win.
In singles, the score went back and forth. Wisconsin equalized early with a point at No. 6. Emilee Duong earned a straight set victory to restore the visitors lead. Wisconsin responded with another equalizer at No. 5.
Three matches went to third sets, with the score knotted at 2. Rachel Hanford earned back to back set wins to complete her win over Ava Markham at No. 1. Maria Rizzolo forced a third set, but was unable to complete the comeback at No. 3. The match concluded at the fourth position, a close contest between Ekin Ercetin and Antonela Stoica. The Badgers earned the final point in a 7-5 third set tiebreaker.

The Gophers return to Baseline Tennis Center next weekend, as they host Ohio State on Friday, and Penn State on Sunday. They will look to continue their home success on the season, as they play their final home matches of the spring season.
