MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota true freshman Nyalaam Jok has been honored by the Big Ten Conference as the Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at the St. Thomas Tommie Twilight in St. Paul, Minn., last week.
For the second consecutive week the Gophers saw a school record go down as Jok leaped to the top of the record books in the high jump event. Jok cleared 1.86m (6-1 1/4) to win the event and in the process cleared three collegiate personal bests. Her leap also is a lifetime best for the Annandale, Minn., native and is the first time she has cleared six feet this year. Her mark currently has her tied for the seventh-best in the nation and tied for the best in the Big Ten.
Jok joins Shelby Frank and Kotas Zaltos as winners of the weekly honor this outdoor season. Frank won the honor for her performance in the discus while Zaltos' was for his hammer throw.
This week the Gophers begin the championship portion of their season when the Big Ten Outdoor Championships come to Minneapolis for the first time since 2003. The meet is scheduled for May 13-15 with tickets still available for purchase. For more information on the meet, please visit the meet's championship central page.
