Gophers and Hoosiers Split Doubleheader

5/15/2022 5:10:00 PM | Baseball

IU took game one, 12-0, and Minnesota took game two, 9-8

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team split against the Indiana Hoosiers in Sunday's doubleheader at Bart Kaufman Field. The Hoosiers took game one, 12-0, before Minnesota took game two, 9-8. Minnesota moves to 15-33 (5-16 Big Ten) while the Hoosiers go to 24-27 (10-11 Big Ten).

With the win in game two, the Gophers earned their first Big Ten road victory of the year. Sunday's first game was also manager John Anderson's 1,000th Big Ten game as the head coach at Minnesota (603-398 record).

Game One
Minnesota fell in game one of the doubleheader, 12-0, to Indiana. The Gophers tallied just one hit and had seven total baserunners.

The first game resumed in the bottom of the second inning with the score tied 0-0 after Saturday's rain postponement. J.P. Massey picked up where Tom Skoro left off yesterday and struck out two IU hitters to retire the side in the second.

Massey (2-7) would last 3.2 innings, striking out five but allowing six runs (three earned). Indiana's Ty Bothwell pitched 7.0 innings after replacing Saturday's starter Bradley Brehmer, who pitched two scoreless frames yesterday. Bothwell struck out eight, walked two and didn't allow any hits.

The Hoosiers would start the scoring with runs in four straight innings to take a commanding 10-0 lead into the seventh inning. It started in the bottom of the third when IU's Josh Pyne ripped a two-out, two-run double, scoring the first two runs of the afternoon.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, IU loaded the bases with a double, a hit by pitch and a single. With one out in the frame, a chopper to third base was fielded by Jack Kelly, but an errant throw home skipped behind around the backstop and the Hoosiers plated two more. An RBI groundout on a fielder's choice put IU up 5-0 with their third unearned run of the inning.

The Hoosiers went up 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth after a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly. They would add four more in the sixth off a walk before an RBI triple by Bobby Whalen. Another two-out, RBI double by Pyne gave IU an 8-0 lead. A no-doubt, two-run home run by Carter Mathison put them up 10.

IU would score two more in the bottom of the ninth to go up 12-0, which would be the final score.

Game Two
The Golden Gophers emerged victoriously in a wild game two, 9-8. Minnesota led 6-1 though 4.5 innings before the Hoosiers clawed back to take an 8-7 lead heading into the ninth. Kyle Bork wouldn't let the Gophers be denied, however, as he crushed a game-winning two-run home run off the scoreboard in left center field.

Reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Week Aidan Maldonado tossed 4.2 innings, striking out seven while giving up five hits and four earned runs. He left with a couple outs in the fifth inning after running into trouble.

Offensively, Boston Merila, Chase Stanke and Ronald Sweeny each went 2-for-4 and combined for three RBI. Bork went 2-for-5 with a triple, home run and four RBI.

The Hoosiers got the scoring going in the bottom of the second inning when Matthew Ellis hit a two-out, solo home run to left center field.

Minnesota would respond immediately, tying the game and eventually taking the lead in the top of the third. Ronald Sweeny singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He would score on a seeing-eye single from Boston Merila to right field, tying the game. One batter later, catcher Chase Stanke crushed his team-leading 11th home run of the year, a two-run shot, to put his team up 3-1.

With Maldonado continuing to work efficiently, the Gophers offense got back to work in the top of the fifth. Merila was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Stanke singled to right. Kyle Bork then looped a two-run triple down the right field line to give his team a 5-1 lead. Minnesota put some movement on the bases with Bork on third and Drew Stahl on first with two outs. Stahl stole second base and a low throw by IU's catcher allowed Bork to score from third, giving the 'U' a 6-1 advantage.

The Hoosiers would respond in the bottom of the frame. With men on first and second and two outs, No. 3 hitter Hunter Jessee blooped a ball into short left field that hung up in the air and fell safely, plating both baserunners. A ground rule double by IU's Josh Pyne brought the score to 6-4, cutting Minnesota's lead to just two.

Minnesota got one back in the top of the sixth after loading the bases via a pair of walks and a single. Jack Kelly then hit a groundball to first base and the IU first baseman tried to get Stanke advancing to second base and his throw hit him in the back, allowing all runners to reach safely. Bork then popped out to second and Stahl grounded out to the pitcher to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

IU responded with two more in the sixth off left-hander Tom Skoro. Three singles and a wild pitch plated a pair of runs and cut the deficit to just one at 7-6. Will Semb came in for Skoro with two outs in the inning and struck out Pyne to end the frame.

In the bottom of the seventh, center fielder Brett Bateman made the play of the day, robbing a potential home run that would have tied the game at 7-7. A 4-6-3 double play ended the frame and got the Gophers back on offense.

After Minnesota went down in order in the top of the eighth, Rooney came back out to the mound for the bottom of the frame. The Hoosiers got the bats going once again, clubbing two singles and a double to plate a pair and take an 8-7 lead.

In the top of the ninth, the Gophers got Jack Kelly on with a leadoff walk before Bork crushed a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left center to give his team the lead.

Culliver (2-1) closed out the Hoosiers in the bottom of the frame. IU had runners on first and second with two outs before a soft ground ball to Bork at third ended the game.

UP NEXT
Minnesota will host Omaha on Tuesday evening at Siebert Field. After that, the Gophers take on Northwestern in a three-game conference home series to close the regular season.
