Gophers Fall in 11 Innings to Omaha

5/17/2022 10:10:00 PM | Baseball

The Mavericks scored three runs in the top of the 11th

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Gophers baseball team fell 10-7 in 11 innings to the Omaha Mavericks on Tuesday night at Siebert Field.

Minnesota (15-34, 5-16 Big Ten) trailed 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh before tallying two in the seventh and one in the ninth to tie the game. Omaha (24-26, 12-9 Summit) plated six runs in the top of the 11th to take the lead and seal the win.

The Mavericks scored three runs of their runs in the top of the second inning and got a stellar pitching performance from starter Harrison Kreiling, who went 6.0 innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit.

Redshirt freshman right-hander George Klassen started on the mound for Minnesota. After an efficient first inning in which he struck out a pair of Mavs, he ran into trouble in the second, giving up three earned runs on two hits and two walks.

Offensively, the Gophers got multi-hit games from Brett Bateman (2-for-5), Boston Merila (3-for-4) and Jake Perry (2-for-3).

After a scoreless first inning, the Mavericks started off the second with a single and a walk. After a groundout advanced the runners to second and a third, a two-run ground-rule double by Omaha's Drew Reetz scored the first two runs of the game. A two-out RBI single up the middle by Jack Lombardi plated Reetz for run No. 3.

The 'U' finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Ronald Sweeny walked and stole second before advancing to third on an error by Omaha's shortstop. He came around to score after Brett Bateman's ground ball to the shortstop was misplayed for another error.

Omaha plated its fourth run in the top of the sixth. A single by Will Hanafan, a stolen base and an RBI single by Harrison Denk put the Mavericks back up three at 4-1.

The Mavericks replaced Kreiling in the bottom of the seventh with right-hander Jackson Gordon and the Gophers offense immediately got to work. Sweeny tripled off the wall to lead off the inning. He scored for the second time on the game when freshman Jake Perry ripped a pinch-hit single to center. Perry was caught stealing on the third pitch of fellow freshman Jake Larson's at bat. The very next pitch, Larson crushed a solo home run to left field, his first career home run, cutting the score to 4-3.

Back-to-back singles by Brett Bateman and Boston Merila put runners at first and third with one down. The Gophers tried to execute a double steal with Merila taking off for second and Bateman leaving on the throw from the catcher. After Omaha's shortstop cut the throw to second off, he fired home and Bateman was caught in a rundown before being called out for running out of the baseline. The inning ended on a Chase Stanke strikeout with Merila stranded on second.

Minnesota threatened again in the bottom of the eighth. Kelly walked to start the frame before Kyle Bork struck out swinging. With one down, Stahl hit a slow roller to short and the throw to first sailed high, allowing Kelly to run to third and Stahl to reach safely. Sweeny then popped up to third and Perry grounded out to first, ending the inning and keeping the visitors up by one.

The Gophers again put runners on first and third with one out in the ninth. Bateman singled to center and Merila singled to right, allowing Bateman to scamper on to third. A sacrifice fly from Stanke brought Bateman home to tie the game 4-4. Kyle Bork had a chance to send the Gophers home but struck out swinging with men on second and third, putting the game into extra innings.

Omaha broke through to win the game with six runs in the 11th inning. They plated the runs on four hits, five walks and a pair of Minnesota errors.

The 'U' got three back in the bottom of the 11th on an RBI double from Merila and a two-run home run by Stanke before falling 10-7.
