Women's team finishes third overall, men fifth.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program capped off the 2022 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Minneapolis with their third individual Big Ten title on their way to a third-place finish on the women's side and a fifth-place finish on the men's. Abigail Schaaffe won her second straight conference championship in the 400m hurdles while five other events earned Big Ten medals on Sunday.
Schaaffe's 400m hurdles title came in a time of 57.45, using a strong second half of the race to come from behind and capture her sixth-career Big Ten title in just her second year in Minneapolis. Schaaffe earned a second medal later on in the meet, snagging a bronze in the 4x400m relay with teammates Jayla Campbell, Janielle Josephs and Val Larson in a season-best time of 3:34.21.
Just a day after capturing his second consecutive Big Ten title in the 3000m steeplechase Alec Basten was at it again on Sunday in the 5000m. The Green Bay, Wis., native hung back in the chase pack for much of the race before exploding with a 56.75 second final 400m to take the Big Ten runner-up finish in a time of 14:10.32. Teammate Matthew WIlkinson, who was the silver medalist in the 3000m steeplechase, finished fourth in the same race to help Minnesota earn 13 points in the event with Basten scoring 18 on his own during the weekend.
Minnesota kicked off the action on the track with an exciting performance in the women's 4x100m relay. The team of Odell Frye, Akilah Lewis, Lauren Hansen and Amira Young ran to a second-place finish out of lane three to earn eight points for the women's team. The team's time of 44.38 is the third-best time in school history and is a season-best time for the Maroon and Gold.
After finishing 10th in the 10000m event on Friday, Megan Hasz responded with a gutsy performance in the women's 5000m on Sunday. Hasz, who finished third in the same event indoors this season, battled through the top five throughout the race before putting herself in position late to snag another top three spot for the Maroon and Gold in a time of 16:22.04.
Minnesota's final medalist of the day was Tiera Robinson-Jones, earning a bronze medal in the women's triple jump. She nearly matched her season-best mark with her final leap of 13.12m (43-0 1/2) to finish third. Robinson-Jones sat in second throughout most of the competition, but Cierra Pyles of Ohio State was able to eclipse Robinson-Jones on her final attempt with a 13.18m (43-3) to take home the silver. The bronze medal position for Robinson-Jones is her second of her career, matching her indoor third-place finish in the same event earlier this year.
Other notable scoring performances on Sunday included true freshman Floyd Whitaker in the triple jump, the Clemonton, N.J., native leaped to the No. 5 mark in school history to finish fifth overall in his first Big Ten championship competition. Kaleb Siekmeier finished fourth in the men's discus while teammate Jake Kubiatowicz scored in his second event of the weekend with a personal best throw of 55.42m (181-10). Both Kion Benjamin and Amira Young scored in the 100m and the 200m on Sunday with Benjamin setting two school records with a 10.14 while his 200m time was 20.61 for fifth and fourth place finishes. Odell Frye's sixth place finish in the 100m went down as a personal best for the first-year Gopher while Young finished just behind her in seventh overall.
