MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota track and field program saw one ticket get punched to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., on day one of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds in Fayetteville Ark. Kostas Zaltos earned his spot in Eugene with a runner-up finish in the men's hammer throw while Kion Benjamin advanced in the 100m to Friday's final.

Zaltos, who had just three attempts in this round of the NCAA Championships, had all three of his marks exceed the 69-meter mark to easily advance. HIs furthest throw came on his first attempt at 69.89m (229-3). Jake Kubiatowicz also had a solid performance out of the second flight in the hammer throw, finishing 17 overall with a mark of 64.20m (210-7) while Carter Hughes (30th) posted a season-best mark of 61.81m (202-9) and Kaleb Siekmeier (31st) helped Minnesota finish with four in the top 31.

In the 100m it was Benjamin who earned an automatic qualifier by taking third in his heat in a time of 10.38. His time was good enough for 19th overall, and now he will focus on trying to get a top-12 spot on Friday to advance to Eugene. Finn Schirmer also competed in the straightaway sprint event, finishing 29th overall in a time of 10.47, just missing out on an automatic qualifier with a fourth-place finish in his heat. Benjamin also ran in the 200m, where he finished 38th overall.

Other Golden Gopher performances on Wednesday included Eli and Owen Hoeft in the 1500m, with Eli finishing 35th overall. Kyle Atkinson finished 27th in the shot put while Colby Jennings and Mike Herauf competed in the 400m and pole vault, respectively.
