MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota has a large group of competitors around the world that will be aiming to punch their tickets to the 2022 World Athletics Championships that will be held in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field in July. A total of 11 student-athletes that competed for Minnesota this past season will be competing along with four alumni.
Three 2022 First Team All-Americans will compete at the 2022 USATF Outdoor Championships, with Alec Basten and Matthew Wilkinson contesting the 3000m steeplechase while Shelby Frank will throw the discus. Abby Kohut-Jackson will return to competition in the 3000m steeplechase while Nyalaam Jok rounds out this year's Gophers at the event in the high jump. Three additional alums will see action in Eugene this week with Sean Donnelly (Hammer), Benjamin Blankenship (1500m) and Shane Streich (800m) all qualifying. At the junior level, freshman Floyd Whitaker will jump in the 2022 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships in the triple jump.
Also this week are four other national championships across the globe. Akilah Lewis and Kion Benjmain will return to Trinidad & Tobago to compete in their nation's national championships in the sprints. Kostas Zaltos, fresh off his second-straight NCAA bronze medal, will contest the hammer in his home country of Greece. Minnesota's Jamaican duo of Janielle Josephs and Abigail Schaaffe will run in the Jamaican National Championships while alumni Barbora Spotakova will compete in the Czech Republic's javelin event.
