MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota added another pair of names to its list of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans this year with Alec Basten and Kaleb Siekmeier earning the distinction on Wednesday. Minnesota this year has earned 11 honors from the organization in total.

Basten, like Bethany Hasz on Tuesday, has earned the First Team honor three straight years. Siekmeier, who was a Third Team honoree in 2021, was named to the Second Team for the first time in his career after a stellar NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution in order to be nominated for CoSIDA Academic All-District and CoSIDA Academic All-America. Nominees are voted on by CoSIDA members throughout the year.

A native of Green Bay, Wis., Basten earned his third Academic All-America nod and fifth Academic All-District accolade this year. The five-time All-American is the back-to-back Big Ten champion in the 3000m steeplechase and finished seventh overall this year after finishing as the NCAA runner-up in 2021. Basten also finished 10th in the event at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials and plans to compete later this week at the 2022 USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. The three-time All-Big Ten pick owns three Gophers records – the indoor 3,000 meters, the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 8K in cross country. The 2021 NCAA Indoor Elite 90 Award winner is also an nine-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and an nine-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

A native of Mahtomedi, Minn., Siekmeier is a four-time All-America selection for the Gophers, earning his second-straight in the discus this year by finishing fifth overall just two weeks ago to earn First Team honors at Hayward Field. The First Team All-America honor for Siekmeier is his second such of his career and his first outdoors. Siekmeier's lifetime best at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships (59.99m | 196-10) also pushed him up to No. 4 all-time at Minnesota, passing old teammate Phillipe Barnett (2021) and Dominique Howard (2014). The second generation 'U' thrower is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a three-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
