Kohut-Jackson Makes USATF Steeplechase Final

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota's contingent on day two of the USATF Outdoor Championships came away with outstanding performances on Friday. Abby Kohut-Jackson represented the Maroon and Gold on her way to qualifying for the 3000m steeplechase final while freshman Nyalaam Jok and Shelby Frank both finished in the top five in their respective events.
Kohut-Jackson's qualifying came via a time qualifier by clocking a season-best 9:47.65 to finish seventh in her heat. Notably, Kohut-Jackson's heat finished with three of the four time qualifiers. The performance for Kohut-Jackson is an impressive one after the graduate student was unable to compete for a large portion of the outdoor season due to injury, and missed qualifying for the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds after running one steeplechase event at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Minneapolis. Kohut-Jackson will compete in the final on Sunday, June 26, at 4:23 p.m. CT live on the USA TV Network.
Completing her stellar rookie campaign on Friday was Annandale, Minn., native Nyalaam Jok. After finishing 20th overall at the NCAA Outdoor Championships earlier this month, Jok responded with a quality performance in Eugene. Her 1.82m (5-11 1/2) clearance came on her first attempt, and helped her finish in a tie for fifth overall in her first appearance at the USATF senior level.
Frank also brings home a fifth-place finish weeks after finishing sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the same discus circle. Frank, a Grand Forks, N.D., native, is just a sophomore and finished second among collegiate competitors in the event with a mark of 57.20m (187-8).
Minnesota still has a pair of both current and former student-athletes that will compete at the US level this week while more are competing in their respective home countries around the world.
