Zaltos Takes Bronze as Basten, Wilkinson Make Steeple Final

6/8/2022 8:18:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's track program had a successful day at Hayward Field on Wednesday night with Kostas Zaltos taking third in the men's hammer throw while Alec Basten and Matt Wilkinson both made the 3000m steeplechase final. Competing in Eugene, Ore., at Hayward Field, the Gophers earned six team points and will be looking for more on Friday night with a trio of men.

Zaltos began action for the Maroon and Gold late in the afternoon in the second flight of the hammer throw. Zaltos tossed a personal best of 72.51m (237-10) on his third attempt to finish third overall for the second straight season. Zaltos' performance goes down as the best in Gophers' history in the event at the NCAA Championships, with both his third and sixth throws going beyond 72-meters, with Zaltos' previous personal best at 71.95m.

"I'm just so proud of [Kostas]," assistant coach Peter Miller said. "He had a great day and he competed like a champion, but so did the entire field. That was a really fun meet and we learned a lot. He's only a sophomore so the future is very bright and we're so excited where he can go from here."

Zaltos is just the second Gopher in program history to earn two First Team All-American honors in the hammer throw, joining Micah Hegerle who did it in 2012 and 2013.

An hour later Minnesota saw Basten and Wilkinson qualify for Friday's 3000m steeplechase final out of section two. Both qualified automatically, finishing in the top five with Basten finishing third and Wilkinson fourth. For Wilkinson, his 8:30.52 is the third-best time in school history and lowers his lifetime best by two seconds. For Basten, his time of 8:30.01 will put him in the final to defend his NCAA runner-up status that he brings back from last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships.
