MINNEAPOLIS – A silver medal for former Gopher Sarah Bacon highlighted the trio of Minnesota Golden Gophers that competed at the 19th FINA World Championships Budapest 2022, June 18 through July 3.

Bacon's silver came in the 1-meter springboard, the same event for which she was the worlds' runner-up in 2019, making her the first U.S. woman to win two World Championship medals on 1-meter.

Competing against a field of 45 other divers, the Indianapolis, Ind., native was third through the 1m prelims as she posted the highest scores of rounds one and three. In the finals, Bacon scored a 56.40 on her first dive to finish the opening round in second place. She slipped one spot to third following each of her next three dives as she entered the final round. On her fifth and final dive, Bacon posted a 57.20 to climb up one spot and finish second with a 276.65.

Bacon, who recently completed her sixth-year senior season with the Gophers, also competed on the 3-meter, placing fifth overall with a score of 314.25. She was third (324.60) through the prelims and sat seventh (294.60) following the semifinals. In the finals, Bacon was seventh after three dives, but posted the second and third highest scores in rounds four and five, respectively, to grab her final spot of fifth.

Minnesota rising sophomore Bar Soloveychik was the lone Gopher swimmer in action, but he made his presence felt in his very first race of the competition.

Competing for Israel, Soloveychik finished 16th in the 400m freestyle with a time of 3:49.87, breaking the school record of 3:50.43 set by Justin Mortimer at the 2004 Olympic Trials.

Soloveychik followed that up by placing 17th in the 800m freestyle prelims with a time of 8:04.14. In his final competition he helped Israel's 4x200m free relay team to a 10th place finish in a time of 7:12.70.

Also in diving, incoming Minnesota freshman Vivi Del Angel competed for her home country of Mexico. Her first event was the 10-meter platform where she advanced out of the prelims and into the semifinals, where she recorded a score of 227.25 to finish in 17th place.

Del Angel Peniche later teamed up with Samantha Jimenez Santos for the 10m synchronized. The duo moved out of prelims in fifth place before ending in eighth place with a score of 269.10. In addition, Del Angel partnered with Kevin Alexander Munoz Heredia on the mixed 3m and 10m team, placing 10th with a total of 289.35.

Away from the international scene, a pair of Gophers joined Soloveychik in breaking Minnesota long course records last month.

Competing at the Aquajets Invite, rising junior Megan Van Berkom broke the Gophers mark in the 200m fly at 2:12.21, while sophomore-to-be Hannah Cornish did the same in the 100m free at 55.42.
