Minnesota Falls to Cal Poly in Home Opener
8/25/2022 8:18:00 PM | Soccer
MINNEAPOLIS – In its first match against Cal Poly, the University of Minnesota soccer team fell to the Mustangs, 1-0, on Thursday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie stadium.
The Gophers dished out 19 shots on the night, compared to Cal Poly's nine. Minnesota was led offensively by McKenna Buisman and Khyah Harper, who notched four chances each. Megan Plaschko had two saves on the night, one coming in each half.
"We are really disappointed that was our home opener," said head coach Erin Chastain. "We have a great group and I believe in them. When we don't perform to the level that we can, it's disappointing. We'll watch the film and learn. It's a long season, but you can only say that for so long. I think the switch must go off for our group, and it hasn't yet. We'll be working hard to put them in a position to be successful."
Despite keeping a tied score through the 77th minute, Cal Poly's Emily Lieber found her way down the right sideline. After delivering a cross to the top of the six-yard box, Nikki Trucco used her left foot to put away the game winning goal.
Up next, Minnesota will hit the road to face Mississippi State on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. CT. The game will be streamed on ESPNU live from Starkville, Miss.
