Gophers Execute Early Season Gameplan at Oz Memorial
9/2/2022 8:50:00 PM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota cross country team kicked off its 2022 campaign at the Oz Memorial at the Les Bolstad Golf Course. Anastasia Korzenowski captured the victory in the 5K race for the Gophers on the women's side while the men's team had four of the top five finishers in their 6K race.
"The goal was to work together through three and four kilometers in groups, and I thought we did a really nice job at finding their packs," cross country head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "It was a hot day, we just got out of camp, everyone was a little bit fatigued and tired. The times weren't the objective today, it was just getting out there and getting a good competitive effort in again."
The men started the night's competition with Emmet Anderson finishing at the top of the Gophers pack in a time of 19:39.90. Minnesota's top pack saw all four of the Gophers top four finishers cross the line within 0.30 seconds of one another. Just a tenth behind Anderson was captain Eli Hoeft who was third overall. Newcomer Matt Lepine finished fourth while Matt Wilkisnon competed unattached and was fifth. Just behind Wilkinson was Willem Landis who was Minnesota's fifth-best runner at 19:41.30.
Overall, Colton Halla of St. Thomas was the winner of the race with a time of 19:34.10.
The women's race was controlled by the Maroon and Gold from start to finish. Korzenowski was the top finisher in an early season time of 18:53.50. The entire top five of the meet were represented by Minnesota with Brianne Brewster finishing as the meet's runner-up in a time of 18:57.50. Freshman Ali Weimer, who competed unattached, was third overall in a time of 19:11.60. Izzy Roemer, also a freshmen competing unattached, was fourth in a time of 19:19.70 while Liesel Paulsen was fifth at 19:31.10.
Minnesota will be tested next week at the Michigan Preview, which is set for Sept. 9, in Ann Arbor, Mich. The meet will be a preview to the Big Ten Championships, which is also hosted in Ann Arbor.
