MINNEAPOLIS (Jan. 18, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (9-10, 2-6 B1G) women's basketball team picked up its second Big Ten win, and first road win, 75-67 in State College, Pa. on Wednesday night. Sophomore forward Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux scored a career high 31 points on 14-of-18 shooting and collected 14 rebounds for her seventh double double of the season.
Micheaux scored 20 of her 31-points in the first half while 10 of freshman Mara Braun's 15 points came in the fourth quarter. Mallory Heyer also reached double figures for the fourth time in the last five games with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting and added seven rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Maggie Czinano also contributed with eight points in her second straight start on 4-of-6 shooting and added four rebounds.
In a slow start for both teams in the opening quarter Minnesota was able to find its footing to hold a four-point lead at 15-11. During the quarter Minnesota got 10 of its points from Micheaux while Braun added a buzzer-beating three from the win after snagging a long offensive rebound.
The second quarter was again won by Minnesota with the Maroon and Gold outscoring the host Lady Lions 18-15 to hold a 33-26 advantage heading into the locker room. Minnesota hit 7-of-13 shots from the floor during the 10-minute period and saw a lead get to as large as eight points when Heyer hit a pair of free throws with 8:11 remaining in the half. Penn State battled back with an 11-2 run that resulted in a 24-23 lead for the hosts. The Gophers then responded with their own run, scoring 10 of the final 12 points of the half to regain momentum.
Out of halftime Minnesota scored the opening bucket before the Lady Lions scored the next eight to cut the lead to just one just one minute into the half. The lead remained with the visitors until Penn State's field goal at 4:55 put the Nittany Lions up 42-41. Penn State's lead would grow to its largest of the game in the third quarter at five with 2:53 to go in the third. Minnesota closed the quarter by outscoring Penn State by one to take the game to the fourth tied at 48.
The Maroon and Gold stepped up when it counted on Wednesday, shooting 8-of-11 in the fourth quarter, all while hitting 11-of-14 free throws down the stretch. The quarter began as many others did on Wednesday night with a Micheaux field goal down low. Penn State would regain the lead only one more time the remainder of the game, getting a one-point advantage with 6:48 to go before the Gophers used their largest run of the game at 10-0 to take a nine-point lead with 2:32 to go. Penn State attempted to extend the game with fouls down the stretch, but Minnesota hit nine of its 10 free throws in the final 2:32 to earn their first road victory of the season and snapped a five-game losing streak in the process.
As a team the Gophers shot 28-of-56 (50 percent) from the floor, their best against a Big Ten opponent this season. The team shot 18-of-23 from the free throw line and out rebounded Penn State 40-31, giving Minnesota its seventh-straight game with 40-plus rebounds.
A quick turnaround for Minnesota will come in the form of the Boilermakers of Purdue. The Gophers and Boilermakers will tip off on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. CT on B1G+ along with a radio broadcast on the iHeartRadio app or on KFAN+.
