• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is back on the road after a two-game home stint when the Golden Gophers travel to Michigan, Sunday, Jan. 22. Minnesota is just 21-56 against the Wolverines on their home court, but won the last decision at Crisler Center last year. Ben Johnson recorded his first Big Ten win as a collegiate coach on Dec. 11, 2022 in a 75-65 win.
• Sunday's game marks the second time the Golden Gophers will face Michigan already this season eight conference games into the year. By mid January, the Gophers will have had played Purdue and Michigan twice before playing seven conference teams for the first time this season. Minnesota played Michigan on Dec. 8 in Minneapolis as the Gophers lost that meeting, 90-75. Thursday's game marked the second against Purdue as the Gophers opened the Big Ten season against the Boilermakers on Dec. 4.
• The Gophers are coming off a 61-39 loss to No. 3 Purdue, Thursday night at Williams Arena. It marked Minnesota's second-straight loss as the Gophers fell to Illinois, 78-60 on Jan. 16. Joshua Ola-Joseph had 13 points, followed by Dawson Garcia who had seven points and six rebounds and Taurus Samuels who had six. The seven points for Garcia put him over the 750-career point mark.
• Joshua Ola-Joseph earned a career-best 13 points in the loss to Purdue. He scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half, was 6-of-11 from the field and added two rebounds, two steals, and an assist in 27 minutes for the Gophers. Ola-Joseph also established career-bests in FG attempts and steals Thursday. His 13 points Thursday bettered his 12-point production he had against both St. Francis Brooklyn and Nebraska earlier this year. Ola-Joseph has now started in 10 games this season.
• Taurus Samuels is slated to play in his 100th collegiate game Sunday. Playing three years at Dartmouth, Samuels saw action in 82 games before transferring to Minnesota. Now with the Gophers, Samuels has played in 17 games, including the past eight as a starter. Of his 99 collegiate games, 60 have been in the starting role.
THE LAST TIME
• Minnesota and Michigan met on Dec. 8 as the Wolverines earned a 90-75 win. Ta'Lon Cooper led five Minnesota players in double-figures with 16 points, while Pharrel Payne had 15 and Dawson Garcia added 13. Michigan, however, opened the game with a 30-11 lead and shot 52.4 percent, including 10-of-18 on three pointers.
• Minnesota's last win at Crisler Center game on Dec. 11, 2022. Jamison Battle scored 27 points, with 21 coming after halftime, for a 75-65 win. Payton Willis added 17 points, Luke Loewe 14 and E.J. Stephens 13 for the Golden Gophers, who secured the first conference win for coach Ben Johnson.
CARRINGTON SUFFERS INJURY
• Minnesota freshman guard Braeden Carrington has suffered a right leg stress reaction and will be sidelined for approximately four weeks, announced Jan. 19. His status will be re-evaluated after that time.
• Carrington, one of the first off the bench, averages 22 minutes and 6.2 points in 14 games this season.
ABOUT MICHIGAN
• Michigan enters the Minnesota game with a 10-8 overall record and 4-3 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines were on the road Thursday and fell to Maryland, 64-58 in College Park, Md. Prior to that, Michigan defeated Northwestern, 85-78, but lost to Iowa in overtime, 93-84 and in-state rival Michigan State, 59-53.
• Preseason All-Big Ten Hunter Dickinson leads the Wolverines in average points (17.8) and rebounds (8.9) and has 32 blocks this season in 18 starts. Jett Howard follows averaging 15.4 points, while Kobe Bufkin averages 12.1 ppg. He also leads the team in steals, while Dug McDaniel leads the team in assists (65).
