Gophers Make Big Splash at Jack Johnson Classic

1/28/2023 7:08:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS --Ā TheĀ University of MinnesotaĀ track and field program won four events on the women's side at the Jack Johnson Classic at the U of MN Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Gophers women posted three different top 10 program marks in the process.Ā

The highlight of the meet on Saturday was once again Shelby Frank who continued her impressive indoor campaign with a 23.00m (75-5 1/2) mark in the weight throw. The mark not only gave the Gopher the victory, but also propelled her to No. 5 in the NCAA this season and improved on her No. 2 mark in school history. Frank's 23.00m was paired with two other throws beyond 22-meters in her series.Ā

Frank was not the only student-athlete in the Maroon and Gold who made a big jump up the NCAA leaderboard. Alliyah McNeil, who was limited on Saturday (Coach's Decision), leaped to a season-best 1.81m (5-11 1/4) to finish as the meet's runner-up to Daniella Anglin of South Dakota (1.84m). McNeil, who also won the women's long jump, now sits in a tie for 20th in the NCAA and is No. 6 in the Big Ten this season.Ā

Saturday's success was not limited to just field events for Minnesota. Odell Frye ran away with the 60m final with a lifetime best 7.31 to drop a new facility record and improved her fourth-fastest time in program history. The Gophers now have three different sprinters who have gone 7.31 or faster this season, with Frye sitting at No. 3 in the Big Ten and No. 22 in the NCAA.Ā

Back in the field events, freshman Diarra Sow of the United Kingdom leaped to a mark of 12.74m (41-9 3/4) in the triple jump to claim the victory. Sow's mark launched her from No. 9 on the program top 10 list to No. 4 and her leap is the longest mark indoors for the Gophers since Shanique Wright in 2017.Ā

Prior to Saturday the Gophers held a handful of events, as well as the pentathlon and heptathlon, on Friday. Most notably for Minnesota was Lexy Berger in the pole vault, clearing an indoor personal best of 4.22m (13-10) to finish as the meet's runner-up. For Berger the mark is the fourth-best in program history and is just shy of her 4.28m (14-0 1/2) that she posted at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships last season.Ā

A number of Minnesota student-athletes competed unattached at the Jack Johnson Classic on Saturday, with a number of them making their season debuts. Matthew Wilkinson was the winner of the men's mile with the All-American clocking a time of 4:07.28 in the process. First-year Gopher Michael Buchanan cruised to a win in the 60m hurdles in a time of 7.93 while Kion Benjamin (6.68) and Carlon Hosten (6.69) both dropping impressive times in the 60m.Ā

After dropping a facility record in the 300m last year Devin Augustine once again claimed victory in the event with a 34.28, just two tenths behind his 2022 record. Off the track the Gophers had a number of victories which was highlighted by Kostas Zaltos' 22.84m (74-11 1/4) in the weight throw. Zaltos' mark was followed up by Jake Kubiatowicz at 21.05m, Isaiah Schafer (19.80m) and Carter Hughes (18.56m). Schafer's solid day wasn't limited to his performance in the weight throw with the first-year Gopher also picking up a win in the shot put with a mark of 17.54m (57-6 1/2).Ā
