Minnesota Starts 2023-24 Campaign With Sweep of RIT
10/7/2023 9:13:00 PM | Women's Hockey
The No. 4 University of Minnesota women's hockey team completed their season-opening series with a 5-1 win on Saturday night against RIT.
Minnesota (2-0-0) got on the board just 1:23 into the game, as senior Maggie Nicholson scored her second-career goal to give the Maroon and Gold an early lead.
In the next period Abbey Murphy netted her third goal of the young season, scoring a powerplay goal 5:13 into the period. Huber assisted Murphy's goal, marking the third time Huber's done so in just two games. After committing two penalties and temporarily playing with three skaters, the Gophers surrendered a second-period goal to cut the lead to one. Sophomore Madison Kaiser scored her fifth-career goal 16:38 into the second frame, giving Minnesota a 3-1 lead that would carry over into the final period.
The Gophers tacked on two more goals in the final frame, with freshman Ava Lindsay scoring her first goal in Maroon and Gold off an assist from fellow freshman Emma Kreisz and senior Audrey Wethington. Huber added another point to her total when she scored a short-handed goal within five minutes of the opening third-period faceoff.
Lucy Morgan secured her first win as a Gopher on Saturday night, recording 18 saves.
Quotable
"Really solid win here tonight," head coach Brad Frost said. "Great for Lucy Morgan to get her first win as a Gopher and Ava Lindsay getting her first goal as a Gopher. We jumped out right away with a quick start and were able to build on that lead. Got a bit tight in the second period, but again, it's good progression for our group. This was a really good weekend and we know it's going to continue to get tougher, but we like the way we've improved and continued to get better each day."
Notable
- Maggie Nicholson recorded her second-career goal
- Minnesota is now 5-0 all-time against RIT
- Minnesota had five different goal scorers for the first time since March 6, 2022
- Abbey Murphy leads the Gophers in points with 5
- Ava Lindsay recorded 14 shots on the night, 10 of which were on goal
