'U' Closes Fall Slate at UVA's Rivanna Romp

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Minnesota closed its fall portion of the schedule Sunday afternoon as it competed in the Rivanna Romp hosted by the University of Virginia.
The first varsity eight boat led the charge for the Maroon and Gold Sunday as it turned in a fourth-place result in a field of 24 boats. A trio of Golden Gophers' varsity four boats also shined at the Rivanna Reservoir in Earlysville, Va., as they each finished inside the top 13, while two were in the top 10, going up against 25 opposing boats.
Minnesota battled some of the best teams from the east coast, including three teams that finished in the top 21 of last year's NCAA Rowing Championships in Virginia (10), Duke (14), and Navy (21). The Gophers also faced Louisville and North Carolina during their final regatta of the fall season.

"The purpose of this competition opportunity was to challenge our athletes by pushing them outside their comfort zone," Strodel said. "Overall, they did a good job handling new competition and an unfamiliar racecourse. The results reinforce that our team is continuing to make progress. And it is an exciting way to end our fall season! Lastly thank you to all the people that make this happen, our coaches, support staff and administrators! Go Gophers!"
