From Head Coach Alicea Strodel's Desk
"Our team has had a great training trip and I'm proud of the way our seniors and fifth-years are leading this team," Strodel said. "Every year we have the opportunity to line-up against Gonzaga at the end of this trip. This race allows us to see our strengths as a team and also where we need to focus our attention to find more speed when we return to Minneapolis."
Last Time on the Water
The first varsity eight boat led the charge for the Maroon and Gold at the Rivanna Romp hosted by Virginia back in November as it turned in a fourth-place result in a field of 24 boats. A trio of Golden Gophers' varsity four boats also shined, finishing inside the top 13, while two were in the top 10. Minnesota faced some of the best teams from the east coast, including three that finished in the top 21 of last year's NCAA Rowing Championships in Virginia (10), Duke (14), and Navy (21). The Gophers did complete a training trip during winter break as they traveled to San Diego, Calif., for a week of practice in January before the start of the spring semester.
Gophers Announce Captains
Minnesota turns to a second-year captain and two new leaders for its trio of captains during the 2023-24 campaign. Isabella Bejaran (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) returns after serving as a team captain a season ago, while Madeline Lange (St. Paul, Minn.) and Tallulah Sweet (St. Paul, Minn.) join the leadership group for the Maroon and Gold.
Early-Season Scrimmages
After the season-opening Head of the Mississippi regatta on campus, the Gophers competed against the Badgers of Wisconsin in a pair of scrimmages. Minnesota hosted its border rival at home Oct. 14 before it made the trip to Lake Mendota Nov. 4 as the Maroon and Gold gained valuable competition experience.
