Gophers Open Season With a Win Over Bethune-Cookman

Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds and tied his career-high with six assists, while Braeden Carrington had 13 points and Elijah Hawkins finished with 10 points to lead Minnesota (1-0) to an 80-60 win over Bethune-Cookman (0-1) in its season-opener at Williams Arena.
Minnesota, which won its ninth-straight season opener, led 46-22 at the half behind eight points and 11 rebounds from Garcia and eight points from Joshua Ola-Joseph. Minnesota connected on 15-of-24 (.625) first-half field goals, including 5-of-10 three-pointers.
The Gophers stretched the lead to 27 points early in the second half, but BCU managed to cut the deficit to 10 points before Minnesota pulled away down the stretch. The Gophers finished the game shooting 52.2 percent (24-of-46) and making 27-of-35 (.771) free throws behind 14-of-16 from Garcia. Minnesota held BCU to just 23-of-70 (.329) field goals, including 4-of-18 (222) three-point attempts.
Minnesota returns to the court on Friday, Nov. 10, when it plays host to UTSA for a 6:30 p.m. CST tipoff on Peacock.
TEAM NOTES
- The Gophers made 27 free throws, which is almost twice what BCU attempted (14).
- BCU had a 22-9 advantage in offensive rebounds, but only had a 13-10 edge in second chance points.
