STARTING FIVE
•  The University of Minnesota men's basketball team is back in action Sunday when it hosts Iowa at noon. The game marks Minnesota's first competition since Feb. 4.  The Feb. 7 game at Illinois was postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols within the Gopher program. That game has been rescheduled to Feb. 20 in Champaign, Ill. Sunday's game marks the first and only contest between Minnesota and Iowa this season. The Gophers are 102-93 all time against the Hawkeyes, including a 63-55 mark on Minnesota's home court, dating back to 1902.
•  Minnesota dropped an 81-46 contest to Maryland last Saturday in Williams Arena. Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with 14 points and added six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Jaden Henley added eight points and a career-high seven rebounds. Minnesota was limited to eight players in the game, as the Gophers were without leading scorer and rebounder Dawson Garcia and guard Braeden Carrington. Seven of the eight players who played for the Gophers wound up in the scoring column. Minnesota also made 18 free throws, a season high.
•  Pharell Payne was one point shy of his career-high during the Maryland game when he posted 14 points. His career-best was 15 against California Baptist earlier in the year. It marked the sixth double-figure scoring game of his young Gopher career. Payne also established six rebounds and three blocks Saturday. With Dawson Garcia out due to injury, Payne has now started in three games for the Gophers and played a total of 30 minutes against Maryland, the most he's played in Big Ten competition.
•  Ta'Lon Cooper set another milestone in his year with the Golden Gophers. The guard from Roebuck, S.C., established his 1,000th career point. Sitting at 1,004 career points, Cooper had a three-year total of 773 points at Morehead State, while producing 231 so far this season with Minnesota. Cooper also established his 500th career assist mark earlier this year at Ohio State (Jan. 12).

ABOUT IOWA
• Iowa is 15-9 overall this season and 7-6 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes are coming off an 87-73 loss at No. 1 Purdue Thursday night. Prior to their loss to the Boilermakers, Iowa was on a three-game win streak with three-straight home victories over Rutgers, Northwestern and Illinois.
• Iowa is led by Kris Murray, who averages 20.7 points and 8.2 rebounds in 20 games played this season. Kris Murray was named to the Jersey Mike's Naismith Men's Midseason Team and a top-10 finalist for the Karl Malone award. Filip Rebraca follows with 14 ppg and 8.0 rbp, while Tony Perkins and Patrick McCaffery average 11.4 and 11.2 points. Rebraca leads the team with 30 blocks, while Connor McCaffery has a team-best 32 steals.
• As a team, Iowa averages a Big Ten best 81.1 points, while allowing 74.1, also the most in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes are shooting 45.8 percent and 34.9 past the arc.  They average 36.7 rebounds per game and shooting 74.8 percent from the free throw line.

THE LAST TIME
• Minnesota faced Iowa twice last season, both home and away during the 2021-22 season. In the two teams' last meeting,  Iowa won, 71-59 on Feb. 6, 2022 when Keegan Murray scored 24 points and 15 rebounds. Minnesota led in first half, but Iowa rallied in the second for the win.
• The last time these teams met at Williams Arena dates back to Jan. 16, 2022 when the Hawkeyes won, 81-71. Minnesota was without two assistants and four players to either injury or COVID-19 health and safety protocols as the Gophers had the minimum seven scholarship players. Iowa's Keegan Murray scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Minnesota was led by Eylijah Stephens with 22 points, followed by Jamison Battle with 20.
