Emma Carpenter shot an even-par 72 to pace the Gophers and is tied for fifth individually
The University of Minnesota women's goal team opened its spring season today at Nexus Collegiate at the Albany Golf Club in New Providence, Bahamas. The Maroon and Gold ended the first day of competition in seventh place with a team score of 309 (+21).
Despite strong winds, Emma Carpenter led the way for the Gophers with an even-par 72, and Isabella McCauley followed closely behind her shooting 2-over-par 74.
Auburn, which is hosting the tournament, leads the 10-team event after carding an even-par 288. Eight of the top-20 teams in the nation are competing in the Nexus Collegiate.

"It was the tale of two nines today, but that's golf and we need to do a better job of controlling our emotions and the effect that has on our execution," said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "We showed today we can compete with the best in the nation, but we also struggle at times taking advantage of the opportunity we set up for ourselves. I'm excited to get out there tomorrow and focus on being patient, but aggressive."
Notable:
Carpenter finished both the front and back nine even par, posting a total of four birdies. The senior's score of 72 has her tied for fifth individually and just one shot back from the lead.
McCauley notched two birdies, finishing the day with a 74. McCauley is tied for 12th, just one stroke away from cracking the top ten.
Luisamariana Mesones flashed back-to-back birdies on her fifth and sixth holes of the day, helping her shoot an even 36 on her front nine. She ended the first round tied for 42nd with an 81 (+9).
Grace Curran notched five pars on the front and paired that with two birdies in her last four holes to end the day with an 82 (+10). Curran will look to carry that momentum into tomorrow as she is tied for 46th.
Freshman Junrui Chi made her Minnesota tournament debut today and also shot an 82 (+10) to finish tied with Curran in 46th place.
