Rowing Takes Training Trip to San Diego

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gophers rowing team spent a week in the sunshine during a training trip to San Diego, Calif., in January as they continue preparations for the spring championship season. Junior Madeline Lange from the varsity team and freshman Chloe Kremnitzer of the novice squad provided an inside look into their time in southern California.
"A training trip can really act as almost a clean slate," Lange said. "You have this opportunity where your muscle memory for rowing isn't so fresh anymore, so when you get back in the boat, it's this critical time where you can really hit the changes you want to make before getting into competition season."
Before classes officially started for the spring semester, the team was able to spend time together away from campus and enjoy a change of scenery. While Lange is in her third season with the Maroon and Gold from St. Paul, Minn., and has done this trip before, it was a new experience for Kremnitzer, a first-year student from Wausau, Wis.
"I definitely was a little nervous," Kremnitzer said. "I was like, oh we haven't been in a boat in a long time. But once we actually got there, we took a few days to work on ourselves and it ended up being really good."
For the novice rowers that are early in their careers, this trip provided a chance to adjust their perspective and work with different teammates on the water. That helped form new habits that will be called upon in order to thrive when it's time for the pressure of championship races.
"At one point, we ended up going in fours and we had mixed lineups with novice and varsity, so I had Nuala in front of me as my stroke seat," Kremnitzer stated. "It was really nice to experience rowing with someone that's on the varsity team, making sure that you're on time with them and maintain good technique. It also made it a lot easier to understand what the coaches were telling you and translate that into actually rowing."
While the trip allowed both the varsity and novice teams to get back on the water, it also gave the entire team a chance to connect off the boats and build the chemistry necessary to succeed throughout the season.
"It was really exciting compared to previous years as we really got to do a lot of intermingling between varsity and novice," Lange added. "What that does for the team is you get to create more friendships and have an open door of communication. If anyone has questions about the next couple years or what competitions will look like, they actually feel like they have someone they can ask those questions to."
The Gophers also utilized this opportunity to have fun as a team without the added pressures of class schedules and homework that take up such a large part of days during the school year for the student-athletes.
"My favorite part was going to the beach," Lange added. "There were so many of us sprawled out on the sand, jumping in the waves, going on sunset beach walks and finding sand dollars. Those moments just really felt so special, and it felt so special to share them with my teammates."
Minnesota has taken the lessons learned on its trip to California and been applying them into training sessions back on campus as it gets ready to return to competition. The first action for the Gophers this spring is slated for March 10 in Chula Vista, Calif., when they scrimmage against Gonzaga.
