Gophers Post Strong Showing in Loaded Field at Nexus Collegiate

Minnesota ties for seventh at premier spring event

The University of Minnesota women's golf team concluded its first tournament of 2023 today at the Nexus Collegiate in New Providence, Bahamas. The Gophers ended the three-day event with a team score of 919 (+55) to tie for seventh place with No. 11 Ole Miss.Ā 

Minnesota shot a 310 (+22) in the final round on Wednesday, as it totaled 11 birdies and 48 birdies across the board.

As the only unranked squad in the 10-team tournament featuring eight top-20 teams, the Gophers finished ahead of No. 19 Duke and No. 33 TCU, proving they can compete with the top talent in the nation.Ā 

Wake Forest held onto their lead from Tuesday and finished in first with a team score of 875 (+11) to win by seven strokes ahead of LSU.Ā 

Quotable:
"I am super proud of the team for its performance this week," said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "To earn wins against ranked teams is a huge move for us. I am really encouraged by the progress we have made and how we used our training trips to prepare us. What we do next is what matters most."

Notable:
Luisamariana Mesones led the team today with her 4-over-par 76. Her three birdies and nine pars kept her tied for 25th, and she leaves the Bahamas with a three-round score of 81-71-76=228.

Senior Emma Carpenter carded a 6-over-par 78 in the final round and finished with a score of 72-79-78=229 to tie for 29th.

Alongside Carpenter, Isabella McCauley also finished the Nexus Collegiate tied for 29th. She notched nine pars and one birdie on her scorecard today, leaving her three-round score as 74-76-79=229.

Grace Curran recorded six pars and two birdies in her last eight holes which helped move her up three places from Tuesday to Wednesday. Curran finished tied for 38th with a three-round score of 82-74-77=233.

Junrui Chi matched her round-one card with an 82 (+10). She finished her first tournament as a Gopher tied for 57th, scoring 82-84-82=248.Ā 

As an individual, Leah Herzog continued to show improvement and finished round three with a 79 (+7). She had a three-round score of 85-81-79-245 and ended the event 56th.

The Gophers travel to Phoenix for the Feb. 26-27 Westbrook Invitational, which is hosted by Wisconsin.Ā
