Brett Bateman tied a career-high with four hits

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Junior Brett Bateman collected four hits, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers fell to the Oregon State Beavers 8-7 on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore George Klassen (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (0-2). Freshman Caden Capomaccio was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one and striking out four.

In addition to his four hits, Bateman had a double to lead the Golden Gophers. Freshman Kris Hokenson furnished a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore Ike Mezzenga also contributed for the 'U', putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the second inning. Sophomore Jake Perry came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.

The Beavers broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the third inning, when the Golden Gophers got back on the scoreboard. Bateman came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Beavers.

Oregon State expanded their lead to 8-2 before the Minnesota offense got going, reducing the lead to 8-7 in the seventh. The Golden Gophers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run double off the bat of Hokenson. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the final two innings.

» Bateman put together a four-hit day for the Golden Gophers, his first four-hit game since April 4, 2021.
