Men's Team Has Sights Set on Big Tens
2/21/2023 9:30:00 AM | Men's Swimming & Diving
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota men's swimming and diving program begins postseason competition this week at the 2023 Big Ten Championships, Wednesday through Saturday, in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Big Ten Championships will be streamed via B1G+ (subscription required) and live results can be found on Gophersports.com and the Meet Mobile app (subscription required).
A daily schedule, plus streaming links, ticket information and more can be found at the Big Ten's Championships Central.
The Golden Gophers are coming off a seventh-place finish last year, which was their best since the 2019 Championships when they took fifth. All-time, Minnesota has won nine conference championships, including five in a seven-year span from 2001-2007.
Individually, the Gophers have fared well in recent history, claiming 16 event titles since the 2009-10 season.
Fifth-year senior captain Max McHugh is the three-time defending champion in the 100 breast and the two-time defending champion in the 200 breast. With his sweep last year, McHugh became the seventh swimmer in Big Ten history to win both breaststroke events in consecutive seasons. In Minnesota history, McHugh was the third swimmer to win multiple individual events in consecutive seasons.
McHugh's five career individual Big Ten titles are tied for second most in program history with Terry Silkaitis. Only Steve Jackman has more with six. A win in the 100 would also make McHugh the first Gopher ever to win four titles in one event.
Minnesota, which went 6-1 in duals this year and 2-1 in conference action, recorded 47 'B' cuts and 13 qualifying scores for diving.
Eight Gophers have secured multiple individual NCAA 'B' cuts this season, including three with provisional cuts in three different events.
Junior Kaiser Neverman has the team's best time in the 100 fly (46.40) and set school records earlier this year in both the 200 fly (1:42.96) and 200 IM (1:43.91) at the Minnesota Invite. Sophomore Bar Soloveychik owns the fastest time in the 500 free (4:15.66) and has additional 'B' cuts in the 200 free (1:34.22) and 1650 free (14:53.49). Soloveychik also set the school record in the 1000 free (8:54.69) in a tri-dual against Northwestern and Purdue at the end of January
Meanwhile, freshman Alberto Hernandez lays claim to 'B' cuts in the 200 back (1:44.75), 200 IM (1:46.38) and 400 IM (3:50.26).
McHugh (100 and 200 breast) and fellow senior captain Desmon Sachtjen (100 and 200 back), juniors William Christenson (1650 free and 400 IM) and Chris Nagy (500 free and 1650 free) and sophomore Chris Morris (200 free and 200) also have multiple 'B' cuts on the season.
The Gophers also got a 'B' cut from their school-record 800 free relay. Morris, Soloveychik, Neverman and Hernandez finished in 6:16.25 to shatter the previous record of 6:20.41 set in 2009.
On top of these swimming performances, freshman diver Drew Bennett has notched scores high enough to qualify for NCAA Diving Zones (March 7-9 in Minneapolis) on the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform.
