2/24/2023 10:54:00 PM | Women's Hockey
First Team All-WCHA Selections Taylor Heise and Grace Zumwinkle each net two goals in the win.
MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 4/4 Gopher Women's hockey team skated to a 7-0 win over the St. Thomas Tommies at Ridder Arena on Friday evening.
Â
Just a minute into play, Abbey Murphy put a shot on net and Grace Zumwinkle tapped in the rebound to give Minnesota (26-5-3) an early 1-0 lead. Zumwinkle struck again midway through the period, as she redirected a point shot from Emily Oden. Murphy scored on the powerplay with 10 seconds left in the period to give the Gophers a comfortable 3-0 lead at the first break.Â
Early in the second, Taylor Heise scored her 26th goal of the season as she weaved her way through the Tommies' defense and extended Minnesota's lead to 4-0. St. Thomas (8-26-1) went on the power play in the second, but the Gophers' defense stood strong. With four minutes left in the period, Savannah Norcross brought the puck down the ice and dumped it off for Peyton Hemp who found the back of the net for her 15th of the season.Â
Madeline Wethington extended the Gophers' lead midway through the third, sending in a rocket from the point. The Gophers weren't done yet as Heise netted her second of the night and 27th of the season off a pass from Lizi Norton.Â
Skylar Vetter started in goal for Minnesota, making 14 saves in the win. All-WCHA Second Team goaltender Saskia Maurer started in goal for the Tommies, stopping 33 shots before being relieved by Maggie Malecha. The UST freshman had 10 saves in relief.Â
Quotable
"We really established things from the drop of the puck. Our team was ready to go and played with great pace," said Head Coach Brad Frost. "We know it's never easy to eliminate a team from their season, so tomorrow will be a great challenge again, but we're looking forward to it."
Notable
•   With two goals tonight, Grace Zumwinkle moves into a tie with Amanda Kessel for 3rd in program history in career goals (108).
