Quarles Achieves Perfection For First Time in Career, Gophers Finish Fourth At Big Five Meet

The University of Minnesota women's gymnastics team finished the Big Five meet in Lincoln, Neb. with a score of 195.800, placing them behind Michigan State, Nebraska and Ohio State. Redshirt senior Maddie Quarles received a perfect 10 on vault, the first of her career. She's now the sixth Gopher to record a perfect 10 on vault in program history.

Notable
Minnesota started the day strong, with scores of 49.325 and 49.425 in floor and vault, respectively. Quarles' perfect 10 earned her the event title on vault, while fifth-year senior Tiarre Sales tied for the event title on bars with a score of 9.900. Junior Gianna Gerdes earned a 9.925 on floor, leading the Gophers in the event and placing her in a tie for third for the event title.

"It was a tough finish for us today," head coach Jenny Hansen said. "We had three really solid events leading up to beam and unfortunately the team just didn't perform to their capabilities. There were some incredible routines highlighted by Maddie [Quarles]'s perfect vault, but we still have some work to do in order to be the kind of team we know we can be."

All-Around
Gerdes ended the Big Five with an all-around score of 39.475, the second highest all-around score of her career. Junior Mya Hooten competed in all four events for the fifth time this season, earning a score of 38.825.

Event Breakdown
FLOOR
The Maroon and Gold started their day on the floor, on which they finished with a team score of 49.325. Minnesota was led by not only Gerdes, but senior Halle Remlinger, who finished with a score of 9.925. Freshman Seria Johnson continued her strong season on floor, earning a 9.850 on Saturday. Hooten finished with a 9.825, while sophomore Marissa Jencks and senior Mallory LeNeave each scored 9.800.

VAULT
In an electric moment on the vault, Quarles displayed brilliance in the event yet again, this time reaching perfection. She bested her previous career high of 9.975. Remlinger was behind Quarles in the Minnesota standings, as she received a score of 9.875. The Gophers had three gymnasts score 9.850, as Gerdes, Jencks and freshman Sarah Moraw filled out the middle of the lineup. Hooten earned a score of 9.825.

BARS
The Maroon and Gold competed on bars in the third rotation, finishing with a team score of 49.150. Sales led the way with a 9.900, tying her season-high score in the event. Hooten received a 9.875 to add to her all-around performance. Gerdes continued her strong all-around day with a 9.850 on bars. Johnson added a 9.825 to the team total, while Jencks and Remlinger rounded out the lineup with scores of 9.700 and 9.100, respectively. 

BEAM
In their final event, Minnesota earned a beam score of 47.900. Junior Emily Koch finished atop the Gopher leaderboard with a 9.850, tying a season-high score. Gerdes added a 9.850 in the second spot. Sophomore Lauren Pearl finished with a 9.675, Hooten received a 9.300, freshman Brooklyn Rowray a 9.200, and Sales a 9.100.
