Four Minnesota Players Collect Multiple Hits in 16-9 Loss to Saint Louis

Minnesota scored all nine runs in the ninth inning
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Four Minnesota players collected at least two hits, but the Golden Gophers fell to the Saint Louis Billikens 16-9 Sunday in the series finale.
Sophomore George Klassen (0-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (0-7). Senior Richard Holetz was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going 4.1 innings, surrendering four runs, two earned, on two hits, walking two and striking out six.
Junior Brett Bateman led the hit barrage for the Golden Gophers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a walk and an RBI. Junior Ike Mezzenga furnished a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Minnesota trailed 16-0 before scoring nine runs in the bottom of the ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers gave up nine runs in the top of the ninth before their offense started clicking and put up nine runs, including a two-run double off the bat of sophomore Jake Larson and a two-run single from sophomore Jake Perry. The Billikens scored four runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the eighth before erupting for nine in the ninth to take a commanding 16-0 lead that was too much for Minnesota to overcome.

» Minnesota pitchers faced 51 Saint Louis hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and seven fly balls while striking out 10.
» Mezzenga led the Golden Gophers at the plate, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI.
» Saint Louis was led offensively by junior Ethan Sitzman, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
» Junior Owen Chaffin led the Billikens pitching staff, throwing 5.2 shutout innings.
UP NEXT
Minnesota (0-7) hosts Milwaukee on Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. CT at U.S. Bank Stadium. B1G+ will provide streaming. The Gophers will then play in the Cambria College Classic against Hawaii, Ole Miss and Vanderbilt next weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium.
