Gophers Finish Tied for Sixth at Westbrook Invitational

Mesones was Minnesota's top finisher as she placed sixth
The University of Minnesota women's golf team wrapped up play at the Westbrook Invitational today in Peoria, Ariz. The team scored under par for the second round in a row, shooting a 286 (-2) today. The Gophers finished the 10-team event tied for sixth with a 2-under par (862) across three rounds and were led by two-top 10 finishers in Luisamariana Mesones (6th) and Emma Carpenter (7th).
Nebraska, which is ranked No. 49, won the competition with a 21-under-par 843.

"Although we shot another under-par round today, it wasn't enough to reach our goal but I'm very pleased with our overall play this week," said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. "Also having two players in the top 10 is exciting. We need to clean up some errors that cost us shots overall but we're definitely trending in the right direction."
Notable:
The team total of 862 (-2) is the second-lowest 54-hole score in school history.
Mesones had her second round under par today, as she shot a 70 (-2). The freshman finished in sixth place with a score of 73-67-70=210 (-6) and had a tournament-high 17 birdies.
Carpenter continued to impress in the final round with 13 pars and three birdies. Her three-round score of 71-69-71=211 (-5) earned her a seventh-place finish.Ā
Grace Curran finished even-par once again in round three carding four birdies on the day. She had a three-round score of 75-72-72=219 (+3) and finished tied for 33rd.
Isabella McCauley closed out the tournament with a 73 (+1). She finished in a tie for 49th, scoring 77-72-73=222 (+6). .
Leah Herzog ended the day with her best round of the tournament shooting a 76 (+4) with two birdies and 11 pars. Herzog had a three-round score of 78-82-76=236 (+20) and finished the event in 78th.

The Gophers will have 12 days off before traveling to Augusta, Ga. for the Valspar Augusta Invitational March 11-12.
