MINNEAPOLIS – Four members of the Minnesota women's swimming and diving program are set to compete at the 2023 NCAA Championships this week in Knoxville, Tenn.
With Tennessee serving as host, competition starts Wednesday night at Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center with two relay races. The rest of the championships will have prelims each day at 9 a.m. CT with the finals scheduled for 5 p.m. ESPN+ will have streaming coverage of each finals session. A complete schedule with heat sheets and more can be found at the NCAA Championships Homepage.
Senior Joy Zhu, juniors Megan Van Berkom and Av Osero, and freshman Vivi Del Angel are all scheduled to compete for the Golden Gophers. It's the 16th time in the last 17 NCAA Championships that Minnesota has sent at least four competitors.
Van Berkom is ranked highest in the 400 IM where she currently boasts the sixth-fastest time in the country at 4:04.86. She achieved that when she won the silver medal at last month's Big Ten Championships. She has swum the event six times this year and posted an NCAA provisional time in each race. Van Berkom has won four of those six races and finished second in the other two.
The Chatham, Ill., native ranks 19th in the 200 IM this year with her time of 1:55.67. That was also recorded at this year's Big Tens, where she took home the bronze medal. Van Berkom, who has won four of her eight races in the event this year, owns the school record at 1:54.92, which she set at the 2022 Big Ten Championships.
Van Berkom owns the 24th-fastest time in the 200 fly this season. She set her mark of 1:55.14 at the Big Ten Championships where she claimed an additional bronze medal. Like with the 200 IM, Van Berkom also owns the school record in the 200 fly (1:53.89) and she set it at last year's Big Tens. She's won the event three times this year and posted 'B' cuts in six of eight races.
Del Angel, Osero and Zhu all qualified after their performances at last week's NCAA Zone Diving Championships.
All three will compete twice with Del Angel on the 3-meter and platform, and Osero and Zhu on the 1- and 3-meter springboards.
Zhu is making her second straight trip to the NCAAs after competing on all three boards last year, though she was also eligible in 2020 before the championships were canceled due to COVID. Del Angel and Osero will be making their NCAA Championships debuts this year.
