MINNEAPOLIS – With freshman diver Vivi Del Angel leading the way, the Minnesota women's swimming and diving program continued its streak of top-25 finishes at the NCAA Championships Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.
One night after becoming an Honorable Mention All-American on the 3-meter, Del Angel took to the platform and put the exclamation mark on her debut season in the Maroon and Gold with a third-place finish to earn First Team All-America status.
Third through the prelims with a score of 317.50, Del Angel was even better in the finals as she recorded a 344.55. All five of her dives scored at least 64.00, including two over 70.00. She opened with a high of 72.00, while her third dive netted a 70.95 that had her second through three rounds. Two final dives of 68.80 garnered her third, the best finish by a Gopher in the event since Yu Zhou was second in 2016.
On the season, Del Angel competed on the platform seven times. She posted five victories and two third-place finishes, while recording the seven highest scores for Minnesota.
All told, Minnesota garnered five All-Americans over three days of competition with Del Angel and fifth-year senior Joy Zhu each earning two and junior Megan Van Berkom adding another.
The Golden Gophers earned a total of 53 points, good for a 17th-place finish. It was the team's best effort since ending 11th in 2019 and marks its 17th straight season with a top-25 finish at NCAAs. That's the 10th-longest active streak in the country.
Virginia won the team competition with 501.5 points, while Texas was second at 390.5 and Stanford was third with 299 points. Minnesota finished fourth among Big Ten schools, bested only by Ohio State (7th), Indiana (8th) and Wisconsin (15th).
One other competitor Saturday for the Gophers was Van Berkom. She placed 33rd in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.37.
Attention now turns to Minneapolis where Minnesota is set to host the 2023 Men's Division I Swimming and Diving Championships next Wednesday through Saturday.
