Gophers Open NCAA Championships in Record-Setting Fashion

MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gopher relays kicked off the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in record-setting fashion as things got underway Wednesday night at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.

The evening started with the 200 medley relay and, for the second time in as many competitions, Minnesota took down its school record. It was one month ago to the day that Minnesota set the mark at the Big Ten Championships by .04. Wednesday night the Gophers lowered it further by .78 to 1:23.43, good for a 19th-place finish.

Junior Casey Stowe led off with a 50 back split of 21.53, while fifth-year senior Max McHugh followed with a 22.39 split in the 50 breast that was the fastest in NCAA history until two heats later when Arizona State's Leon Marchand brought it down to 22.27.

After McHugh, junior Kaiser Neverman split 20.57 in the 50 fly, while fellow junior Lucas Farrar anchored with a 18.94 in the 50 free.

The other event Wednesday night was the 800 free relay where the Gophers also posted an impressive time.

Sophomore Bar Soloveychik equaled his school record in the 200 free as he led off with a mark of 1:33.56. He previously posted that time at last year's Big Ten Championships. Fellow sophomore Chris Morris (1:34.25), Neverman (1:34.55) and freshman Alberto Hernandez (1:36.45) were behind Soloveychik.

Finishing in 20th place, the Gophers' time of 6:18.81 was the second fastest in program history. The only better effort came earlier this year at the Minnesota Invite when they set the program record.

Arizona State leads the team competition with 68 points with North Carolina State in second with 66 and Cal in third at 62.

The action continues at the 2023 NCAA Division I Championships Thursday with the 500 freestyle featuring Soloveychik and junior Chris Nagy, as well as the 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving and 200 free relay.
