Buchanan, Augustine Break School Records to Open Up 2023 Outdoor Season

3/4/2023 2:24:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Golden Gopher men's track and field team had a number of breakout performances in the team's first outdoor meet of the 2023 season at Mike Myers Stadium at the University of Texas. The team won nine different events with Michael Buchanan and Devin Augustine both earning two victories each.

The day was highlighted by Buchanan in the 110m hurdles and Augustine in the 200m. Buchanan, a first-year Gopher, showed why he was one of the most sought after NJCAA transfers this offseason with his official debut in the long jump and 110m hurdles. Buchanan's 13.84 came with an allowed 1.7 m/s wind aid, breaking the Gophers 26-year old school record in the event that was held by Niles Deneen (13.95). Buchanan also hit a mark of 7.60m (24-11 1/4) to win the men's long jump event. That mark goes down as the No. 5 mark in program history and is the best jump by a Gopher since 2016 (Luca Wieland).

Augustine's 200m school record time of 20.60 edged out teammate Kion Benjamin's 2022 time of 20.61 for the record. Augustine, a sophomore, continued his breakout meet in the 100m. Augustine, along with Carlon Hosten in the 100m, posting lifetime best times in the event with Augustine's 10.26 winning the event. Augustine's 10.26, with a wind aid of 1.6 m/s, goes down as the No. 2 mark in program history. Right behind him was Hosten at 10.28, making him the third-fastest Gopher in history. Kion Benjamin opened his outdoor season as well in the event, posting a 10.28. Minnesota's top three 100m times in history are all currently on Minnesota's roster.

The pole vault was the site of Jak Urlacher's official breakout performance. The sophomore cleared a lifetime best 5.50m (18-0 1/2) to win the event with ease. For reference, Urlacher's clearance would have been the 13th-best outdoor mark last season and now puts him at No. 5 all-time at Minnesota outdoors. Prior to Saturday's performance Urlacher's outdoor best was just 5.05m (16-6 3/4).

A few minutes later Kostas Zaltos proved that he is picking up right where he left off last season in the weight throw. The native of Greece flung his best mark of 71.39m (234-2) on the fifth-mark and went beyond 70-meters three times. Additionally Jake Kubiatowicz, Kaleb Siekmeier and Carter Hughes all opened their seasons in the weight throw.

Minnesota's success in the field did not stop there with another first-year Gopher making a big splash, this time in the shot put. Isaiah Schafer hurled a mark of 19.79m to win the shot put, which is No. 4 in program history and will easily put him into the NCAA Regional field later this year.

Austin Parsons made his javelin debut for the Maroon and Gold. The first-year Gopher sent his best of 53.84m (176-8) on his third attempt.
