Chavez Notches Two Extra Base Hits in Minnesota's Loss to Indiana

4/7/2023 7:23:00 PM | Softball

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers got a big game from sophomore Kayla Chavez, who recorded two extra base hits in a 9-3 loss to the Indiana Hoosiers Friday.

Senior Autumn Pease (14-6) got the ball to start for Minnesota (21-15,2-5 Big Ten) and took the loss.

Chavez's two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-4 day, and included two doubles. Graduate Natalie DenHartog put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Sydney Strelow also helped out for the Golden Gophers, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Freshman Billi Connell came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.

The Hoosiers then scored four runs to retake their advantage heading into the fifth inning, when the Golden Gophers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Minnesota picked up two runs when a single from DenHartog scored senior Amani Bradley and Chavez, which brought the score to 5-3 in favor of the Hoosiers. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as Indiana added four runs to their tally on the way to a 9-3 final.
