Track Squad Breaks Four School Records in Tucson

4/8/2023 10:42:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

MINNEAPOLIS – Four different school records went down for the Golden Gopher track and field teams on Saturday in Tucson, Ariz., at the Jim Click Shootout. Both the men's and women's team had two school records fall which included both the 4x100m relay teams along with Amira Young in the 200m and Michael Buchanan in the 110m hurdles.

The men's team, who entered the weekend as the No. 11 team in the NCAA, got the fireworks started with Buchanan in the 110m hurdles. The first-year Gopher clocked a 13.78 (+0.8 m/s wind) to finish as the meet runner-up. Buchanan's record broke his own time of 13.84 that he set earlier this season.

Just a short time later the Maroon and Gold saw another school record go down in the women's 4x100m relay team. The returning All-American crew of Odell Frye, Lauren Hansen, Akilah Lewis and Amira Young clocked a time of 43.88 to win the event in Arizona and became the first quartet to go below 44 seconds in program history. The time also went down as the No. 11 time in the NCAA this season (as of April 8).

The men's 4x100m relay team matched that school-record performance with one of their own. The team of Devin Augustine, Kion Benjamin, Finn Schirmer and Carlon Hosten were clean and posted a time of 39.39 to finish second overall. As of April 8, the time is the 14th-best in the country and is the No. 2 time in the Big Ten.

The final school record of the day for the Maroon and Gold came when Amira Young broke her own 200m record in a time of 23.10 (+0.1 m/s wind). In her outdoor season debut Young was a part of two school records on Saturday with her 200m record being her fastest time in the event since 2021. Young also was the winner of the 100m on Saturday, posting a lifetime best of 11.25 (+0.8 m/s wind), which went down as the No. 2 time in school history.

Minnesota also got outstanding performances out of their 100m hurdles crew with Zariyah Black and Maja Maunsbach both posting lifetime bests in a wind-legal race. Black edged Maunbach in a time of 13.37 to finish second overall while Maunsbach's 13.39 was third. In program history it makes Black No. 3 while Maunsbach is now No. 4 as sophomores.

Janielle Josphes continued the theme of Minnesota's sprints crew dominating with a lifetime best time of 52.33 in the 400m to claim the victory. The All-American's time is an early season top-10 time in the nation and now has her within a second of the school record set by Titania Makland (51.40, 2018).

Minnesota's next meet is scheduled for April 12, back in the Twin Cities. The Tomcat Twilight will take place at the University of St. Thomas.
