MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota's Kostas Zaltos has been named the 2023 Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. Zaltos was the national runner-up in the men's hammer throw in early June and broke the Big Ten's conference record in the event in the process.

The redshirt junior, who hails from Greece, is the fifth man to earn the distinction in program history and is the first since 2017 when Luca Wieland won the honor outdoors. Zaltos is just the fourth to be awarded this honor outdoors and is just the seventh Gopher man to earn any Big Ten Athlete of the Year award (Track or Field).

Zaltos finished as the national runner-up in the hammer at the 2023 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a lifetime best of 76.33m (250-5). He won five event finals this season, including victories at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and Drake Relays. He won his third-straight Big Ten title in the hammer throw on his final attempt, which resulted in a Big Ten Championship record mark of 74.93m (245-10). Zaltos also finished the college season with the No. 2 mark in the NCAA and the No. 21 mark in the world (as of June 12, 2023).

Next for Zaltos are the Greece National Senior Outdoor Championships, which will be held from July 7-9 at Panthessaliko Stadium in Volos Greece. Zaltos currently ranks No. 3 among Greek national hammer throwers in 2023.
