Wilkinson Caps Off Gopher Career With First Team All-America Honors

6/9/2023 9:06:00 PM | Men's Track & Field

Matt Wilkinson capped off his collegiate career with First-Team All-America honors and a fifth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase tonight at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas.

Hailing from Greenwood, Minn., Wilkinson garnered First-Team All-America honors for the second-straight year when he finished in a time of 8:36.12. His fifth-place finish bettered last year's eighth-place spot at the 2022 NCAA championship in the same event. Wilkinson was the only Big Ten competitor in the steeplechase final, as BYU's Kenneth Rooks won the title in 8:26.17.

Wilkinson made his presence known during his short Gopher tenure after transferring to the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2021 from Division III Carleton College (Minn.). In May, he was also named the 2023 Big Ten Men's Track Athlete of the Championships where he won Big Ten titles in both the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m.

Following NCAAs, Wilkinson will race professionally as well as compete at USA World Team Trials, also in the steeplechase, next month.

The Gophers gained four points in the team standings and will finish with 15 points, which currently ranks seventh through 10 of 21 events contested.

The Wilkinson 3000m steeplechase final marked the final event of the Gophers' track season. It also marked the final event of the 2022-23 athletic calendar year for the Gopher Athletics.
