The Trinidad & Tobago national won the 100m and 4x100m relay Big Ten titles in 2023.
MINNEAPOLIS -- Three-time Big Ten champion Kion Benjamin has announced that he will return to the Golden Gophers for an additional year of competition next season.
The Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, native decided to utilize his final year of eligibility permitted under NCAA guidelines.
"I joined the University of Minnesota four years ago, and I have been happily competing for the Maroon and Gold for quite some time now. The 'M' will forever be on my chest, but I am not done yet. I'll see you all again next season!"
"I am extremely happy that Kion is returning for his last season," assistant coach Ibrahim Kabia said. "This gives him a solid training group for one more year as he transitions to the next phase of his career. It also gives our sprints group and relay some great continuity. Kion's return allows us to once again be very competitive next season."
Benjamin had his most consistent season of his career in 2022-23, which included two Big Ten titles, two Second Team All-America honors and a 4x100m relay gold medal at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games. Benjamin's season is ongoing as the Gopher is scheduled to compete at the Trinidad & Tobago Senior National Championships later in July.
Benjamin currently holds two outdoor school records at the 'U', one in the 100m in a time of 10.07 and the other being in the 4x100m relay in a time of 38.70. In 2023 Benjamin became the first man to reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100m in school history and also was the first to win multiple 100m Big Ten championships. He also scored in the 200m at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships and was a key factor in Minnesota's second-place team finish, the highest for the men's program in a decade.
