Golden Gophers Kick Off 30th Year with a Win
8/17/2023 8:58:00 PM | Soccer
MINNEAPOLIS - Five goals from four Golden Gophers propelled Minnesota over Niagara to secure a home opener win at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium on Thursday night.
With the 5-1 win, Minnesota (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) opens the 2023 season on a high note over the Purple Eagles (0-1, 0-0 MAAC).
The Maroon and Gold were led by Megan Nemec, who scored two goals in her debut. Sophia Boman found the back of the net, including two assists on the night. Sophia Romine and Izzy Brown also recorded goals.
Kate Childers, Jordy Rothwell, Jelena Zbiljic, and Nemec saw their first starts as Gophers while Taylor Heimerl, Paige Kalal, Josie Wood, and Cam Xu came off the bench.
"We're proud of the way we started the game, the energy, and the learning we took away from the exhibitions," said head coach Erin Chastain. "We had a collective effort from individuals stepping up, playing how we know they're capable. We're really excited about the group and building off this win."
Boman's goal came off a free kick, unassisted in the fourth minute, 20 yards out from the goaline. 13 minutes later, Nemec ran down the left sideline and finished unassisted. Securing the 3-0 mark in the first half, Romine tapped the ball into the net off a header from Boman.
Izzy Brown wasted no time getting the Gophers started in the second half. Off a pass from Boman in the 18-yard box, Brown tapped the ball around a Purple Eagle defender and found the frame.
After an overturned offsides call that turned into a penalty kick against the Maroon and Gold, Niagara's Emily Hahnel finished the lone goal of the game for the Purple Eagles.
Nemec answered back in the 74th minute, finishing her second goal and first brace as a Gopher.
Up next, Minnesota faces New Hampshire on Sunday at 1 p.m. CT at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The match can be streamed on B1G+.
