Gophers Fall in Four to No. 7 Longhorns

Mckenna Wucherer led the 'U' with 14 kills
MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 5 Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team fell to the No. 7 Texas Longhorns on Tuesday night at Maturi Pavilion. Texas took it in four sets, 14-25, 25-23, 17-25, 23-25.
Mckenna Wucherer led the 'U' with 14 kills while Taylor Landfair had 11 kills and 10 digs. Melani Shaffmaster tallied her third straight double double with 31 assists and 12 digs. Kylie Murr paced the backcourt with 13 digs.
"The lessons that we learn that we get this match are going to be a big part of our run in December," said head coach Keegan Cook. "I love who this team is and I want them to keep being passionate about learning. We're going to go learn even more about ourselves on the road this weekend at Florida."
As a team, Minnesota (2-1) hit .156 with 46 kills, 12 team blocks, 60 digs and three aces. Texas (1-2) hit .234 with 55 kills, 13 team blocks, 66 digs and 10 aces.
Madisen Skinner led Texas with 16 kills and 11 digs.
Set Breakdown:
Set 1: The Gophers fell in set one, 25-14. The home team was held to .276 hitting while the Longhorns hit a scorching .500 with four blocks. Mckenna Wucherer led the offense with four kills while Taylor Landfair had three. Melani Shaffmaster had 10 assists on Minnesota's 13 kills.
Set 2: Minnesota rallied back to take set two, 25-23. The Gophers took an early 5-1 lead, paced by a pair of kills from Landfair and one from Grote, leading to a UT timeout. The Longhorns would rally back to take the lead midway through the set, and led by as many as three a 21-18 and 23-20. A 5-0 Gophers run closed out the set, led by two kills from Wucherer and a pair of blocks from Arica Davis. Wucherer and Landfair had four kills each in the set for the 'U' (.275), while the team had four blocks. Minnesota held Texas to just .175 in set two.
Set 3: Texas responded to retake the lead, winning set three, 25-17. Minnesota was held to just .118 hitting while the Longhorns ripped .297. Landfair and Wucherer tallied three kills each, breaking into double figures with 10 and 11 kills, respectively. Davis walled up on defense with two blocks as the 'U' posted three as a team.
Set 4: Minnesota led much of the fourth set, including starting out with a 4-1 lead before Texas called its first timeout. The Gophers pushed their lead out to as much as four at 17-13 after a block from Lauren Crowl and Phoebe Awoleye, which led to UT's final timeout of the set. The Longhorns went on an 8-2 run to respond and take a 22-20 lead. The Gophers would knot it up again at 22-all after Wucherer's 14th kill of the match, but couldn't retake the lead. UT would take set three, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.
