Minnesota Finishes Tied For Fifth at Gopher Invitational

Warian and Galdos lead Gophers in 18th Annual Gopher Invitational
MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota men's golf team finished in a tie for fifth place at the 18th annual Gopher Invitational at Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. Monday.Â
The Gophers shot a final round 288 to finish with a 54-hole score of 3-over par (287-280-288–855).Â
In its first appearance at the tournament, UNC-Wilmington won by five shots with a team score of 7-under par. Kent State came in second with a score of 2-under par.Â
Kansas' Will King was the low individual with a score of 8-under par, beating UNC-Wilmington's Walker Isley by one shot to claim medalist honors

"We put ourselves in contention, but it did not turn out the way we intended it to," Minnesota assistant coach Larry Bobka said. "The boys battled and fought hard, and we are ready for the rest of the season."Â
Senior Ben Warian and junior Eduardo Galdos tied for the team lead at 1-under par and finished in a four-way tie for 11th place.Â
Rounding out the team lineup were junior Bennett Swavely, as well as graduate seniors Jacob Pedersen and Brock Winter. Swavely finished tied for 25th with a 54-hole score of 215 (72-72-71), while Pedersen tied for 31st with a 216 (70-70-76), just one shot back of Swavley. Winter ended in a tie for 68th at 228 (76-75-77).Â
Playing as an individual, sophomore Jack Wetzel tied Pedersen over the 54 holes at 216 (71-70-75).Â
Four other Gophers, redshirt junior Gavin Hagstrom, sophomores Mason Roloff and Cormac Sharpe, and freshman Kyler Schamb, competed as individuals.
Roloff (76-71-71) finished two shots behind Wetzel in a tie for 40th at 228, while Sharpe ( 77-73-79) ended in 71st at 229. In his first collegiate tournament, Schwamb (75-78-82) placed 73rd with a 54-hole score of 235.Â
Looking Ahead:Â
The Gophers are off from tournament play until they travel to Northfield, Ill., to compete in the Windon Memorial, Sept. 25-26 at Sunset Ridge Country Club.Â
