MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis team finished out their 2023 fall season debut on Sunday, notching a 3-3 doubles record and a 4-2 singles record on the final day of the annual Gopher Invitational tournament. The tournament began on Friday, Sept. 15 and was played through the weekend. Each day began with two rounds of doubles, followed by a round of best two-out-of-three singles play. The Gopher Tennis squad finished with overall records of 12-6 in doubles and 14-4 in singles.
Arterberry's Opener
The 2023 Gopher Invitational marked the University of Minnesota debut of head tennis coach Lois Arterberry. Throughout the weekend, the Gophers matched up against North Dakota, South Dakota, Northern Iowa, Marquette, Omaha, and St. Thomas—the last of which Arterberry previously held the position of head coach before being hired by the 'U' last spring.
At the conclusion of the tournament, Arterberry said "I'm really grateful to all of the teams that took the opportunity to participate in the Gopher Invite. It was a great way to start off the year, to get a lot of solid competition across the board. Our program as a whole had a successful weekend—having a total of fourteen singles wins and twelve doubles wins gave us a good idea of where we're at, and also of some of the things that we need to work on leading into the San Diego tournament."
Regarding individual performances, Arterberry notes that "[Sophomore] Sofia Pizzoni had a really successful weekend, going 3-0 in singles. Sofia didn't get to compete in the spring, so this is a great start to a new year for her. [Freshman] Emma Belluomini also had a successful weekend, going 3-0 in singles as well. Coming in as a freshman can sometimes be tough, but she battled through the entire weekend. Overall, each athlete had standout matches in both singles and doubles, and also some matches during which we saw ways for them to improve. As coaches, we have our baseline now, and we know what we need to do to keep building the program."
Next Up
The Gophers will compete in their second tournament of the fall season in two weeks, from Sept. 29-Oct. 1, as they travel to San Diego, Cali. for the San Diego State University Invitational. 2023 will mark the second year in a row in which they participate in this event.
