Gophers Stave Off Late Maverick Push To Secure Win

1/26/2024 8:56:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota women's hockey team won its series-opening matchup with Minnesota State on Friday, prevailing 4-3 at Ridder Arena.

A late push from the Mavericks forced the Gophers into a close game, one the Maroon and Gold were able to rise above as redshirt junior Abbey Murphy broke the 3-3 tie and gave the Gophers a one-goal lead that held to the final buzzer.

Fifth-year goaltender Lucy Morgan started between the pipes for the Gophers, saving 24 shots in the win.

The lone goal of the opening frame was scored by junior Ella Huber, who found the rebound of a Peyton Hemp shot and sent it to the back of the Maverick net. Both teams had one powerplay opportunity in the first, with the Gophers taking advantage to give them a one-goal lead after 20 minutes of play.

Minnesota lit the lamp twice more the second period, with goals coming from the sticks of P. Hemp and Murphy.

The Gophers allowed the Mavericks to get back in the game in the final frame, as Minnesota State rattled off three straight goals to even the game with just over 10 minutes to play. Murphy's second goal of the game – which came with roughly seven minutes remaining – pushed the Gophers to victory.

Quotable
"Good win here tonight against a Minnesota State team that didn't go away," head coach Brad Frost said. "We give them a lot of credit. We didn't like giving up the lead in the third, but we're really proud of our group and how they responded once Minnesota State tied it up. There was a belief on the bench that we were going to find a way, and we did. We know it will be even tougher down at their place tomorrow, but we're looking forward to the challenge."

Notable
- Abbey Murphy records her 12th multi-point game of the season
- Josefin Bouveng notches her 18th and 19th assists of the season, leads all Gophers
- Bouveng, P. Hemp and Emma Kreisz each increase point streak to three games
- Minnesota moves to 105-4-3 against Minnesota State
