Minnesota Finishes Strong on Last Day of ITA Central Regionals

Memphis, TN- The University of Minnesota tennis program wrapped up the four-day 2024 ITA Central Regional Championships on Saturday, competing in various consolation rounds. Nine Gophers played in singles, and three pairs competed in doubles, going 3-1 in doubles and 6-3 in singles on the final day.
Freshman Deniz Turan claimed the B draw title at the ITA Central Regional Championships, defeating Missouri's Gian Octa in a tight 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 match. Turan won five matches en route to the title, beating opponents from Tulsa, Missouri State, North Dakota, Arkansas State and Missouri. She remains undefeated in singles this season with an 8-0 record.
Nine Minnesota players competed in the Saturday draw, earning doubles wins from the pairs of Mia Liepert and Arina Valitova, Aiva Schmitz and Nora Knezevic, as well as Sofia Pinto and Anali Kocevar. In singles play, Pinto, Jeselle Ante, Anlin Xie, Schmitz, and Kocevar also picked up victories.

"I thought it was a really strong finish for the team," head coach Lois Arterberry said. "Congratulations to Deniz on winning the B draw and remaining undefeated for the season she is competing well. We also had some notable wins today from Anali, against a strong Oklahoma player, Aiva also winning in the third set again Kansas State Anlin and Jeselle dominating their opponents. As we continued from the first day, our level definitely rose as a team and individually. Everyone was able to pick up some noticeable wins and began competing a lot better. Doubles today was good as well. We still have some things to work on in terms of pairings, but we have a baseline that we can work with as we continue this year. As we return to Minnesota, we will continue to work hard and finish the year on a positive note."

The Gophers will continue their 2024 fall season with a trip to Hilton Head, South Carolina to compete in the Dennis Van Der Meer Shipyard Cup from Oct. 21-27.
